Maxalt

Well, I finally got the Rx that the Dr gave me as a PRN for migraines....Maxalt.
I can take every 2 hrs up to 3 per day. But quanity is only 8 with 3 refills. My question is...is this the typical way to prescribe this Rx...as opposed to getting a 30 day supply? Or is this just how this particular doc operates???

Maxalt really helped my migraines.  I had tightness & hoarseness with Imitrex which is a Triptan, but not with Maxalt or another one.  I took them for years until 2003 when the migraines stopped.

I want to SCREAM!!!
I just talked to the nurse & she said it was not an "adverse reaction" that the "triptans" do that. So, I said maybe we need to get out of that drug family but, I dont think she even heard me, if dhe did, she didnt act like it. She said sjhe would talk to the Dr & see IF he wanted to give me something else! Arghhh!!! (waiting for her to call back)

Don't mean to interrupt but I am actually a pharmacist and thought I could clarify the maxalt questions.... Maxalt is not a beta blocker. It is a 5HT1B receptor agonist. Basically it's a triptan drug that is used for vascular migraines. Vascular migraines cause vasodilation of blood vessels and that dilation causes pain. Triptan drugs cause vasoconstriction of those blood vessels and thus reduced the pain caused by pressure. The only big risk is hypertension (vasoconstriction can increase blood pressure). That's why the max quantity was only 8 tablets in 30 days (I believe they come in a box of 8 or 10). If u don't get any benefit from them then either u waited too late to take the medication or you do not have migraines of vascular origin (I'm going to assume the later). Maxalt is available in a regular tablet form and an oral dissentigrating (ODT) form. The regular tablet form is now available in generic and is fairly cheap. If you received the brand name only ODT version then I would make sure the MD writes for only generic drugs and ask the pharmacist (who should have mentioned it came in generic in a different formulation) if there is something similar that the MD can change it to before you pay a lot for a RX. Good pharmacies will catch this issue and fix it before you even arrive to pick it up. (At least that's what I do at my pharmacy for my patients)
I would advise that if u had chest tightness, chest pain, worsening symptoms of any kind NOT to take it anymore. Immediate check your BP at home if u have those types of symptoms and call 911 if you are in hypertensive crisis (BP >200/100 or sever symptoms). Maximum of 3 tablets per day is to prevent you from inadvertently having a bleed in the brain due to extreme hypertension.
I am new to the chiari world but don't see why maxalt would be a contender for treatment of chiari induced headache. Just based on the mechanism of action of the drug I feel it could be quite dangerous.  Diamox (acetazolamide) has some off label uses but I am still combing through the limited publications on the subject and wouldn't suggest it unless u had very specific imaging and symptoms.
Hope that helps!

Side effects of Maxalt is pressure in your chest & throat.
I did ok the times I've only needed it once. But, today I had to take it twice. After that second dose...omg, the pressure is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! I honestly think it is worse than a migraine. There are no words to describe it. You can't breathe & you can barely swallow just your saliva!
I'm wondering if it is side effects that get better the more you take it? And if it does...does it get better if you don't need to take it every day???

That was one of the migraine meds I took for about four days and it was crazy expensive.  I don't recall that it did anything for me except motivate me to seek another doctor.  I think I still have some under the bathroom sink...

It' sheen just over 5 years now so my memory may be off but it seems it was like every 4 hrs but no more than 3 or something like that.

Frankly it did nothing for me. My son was another story it really helped him. It is beta-blocker I believe.

I was given this med before they DX CM by my PCP who insisted
this CM had nothing to do with anything.... Sorry a bit of anger comes
back thinking about that time period.

Anyway, it's $440 for 12 pills. Dr prescribed it me 'as needed' but only
12 pills with 3 refills.
