Neurophysiologist Monitoring

I received my surgery packet the other day from Dr. Heffez and it included info saying that a neurophysiologist would be monitoring nerve signals during surgery.  Well there was a detailed explanation, but I have posted so much on here today that my hands are hurting....LOL

Anyway, I had never heard of "neurophysiology" before nor have I seen anyone speak of it here before so I am wondering what can you guys tell me about them?

(I talked with the NP that is going to be doing my pre-op and surgery and she was very informative)

i think it depends too, on the nurse hooking you up!  lol!  dr. h did my surgery 11/23/09 and i was completely wired, scalp and all, before going into the or.  they had my central iv in place and then wheeled me into the or.  i remember looking at a male nurse that had tattoos on his arms and saying he reminded me of my son with those "things" all over his arms.  lol!  then nothing until i woke up begging for ice because my throat was so dry!  don't sweat it girls!  you won't remember any of the other stuff cuz you'll be sleeping soundly!  lol!

when are you having your surgery? I'm having mine too with Dr. Heffez on June 28th and wondered how much you get done while still awake and coherent.

Thanks for all the responses.  I wasn't worried about any of it, I was intrigued by it and wanted to find out others experiences.  It actually is very comforting to know how much care my/our medical teams give to us!

Dr. Cohen called me yesterday and talked with me about the what's, how's, and why's, so all of my questions were answered.  :)

Well it appears that with me EVERYTHING  was done when I was already out...I don't remember half of the stuff that I hear others have experience during their surgery prep.

I had nothing...no catheter, no electrodes...just me and an IV..but had it all when I woke up... a little freaky actually..

Yeah its something they definately have to have because it monitors all the nerve signals and such, but nothing for you to worry about! If you read that "book" i wrote a little bit ago about my surgery, i said i looked like i had been wired for a bomb, thats what it is. Before surgery (and why you have to be there so early) someone will come in and put electrodes and wires everywhere! Two on each ankle, two on each leg like around your knee, two on each wrist, two on your chest, two on your back, and thats the only ones i remember lol i think there are also some on your head but they attach those after you are out in the OR.

Hi...yes, sorry but they r important to be in the OR with u and ur NS as they make sure nothing goes amiss with the nerves during the surgery. ie- gets pinched ect.....

I also had doplar mapping done  in addition, not sure I could explain that one, but it  was more  for the research side.

I did not go to WI for my surgery so not sure what ne one that did could tell u about them up there.
