I am new to this forum. I had Chiari srgery in 2001 in Dallas by David Barnett. Prior to surgery I had terrible headaches, afterwards I felt cured. I still am in good shape as far as pain goes. However lately I have been having difficulty with my short term memory and this worries me. Is there anyone that has experienced this and is there any help for my memory.
Thanks

I have been drinking 4 cups a day for the past 15 years. I have been trying to eat better lately. I still don't eat enough vegetables. But altogether not too much has changed for me in the last 6-7 years. I think the memory loss may have more to do with having too much on my plate. I am self employed and I have a lot to remember but I am not sure so I wanted to see if chiari may have caused it. thanks for the help and i hope everything goes well for you.

how much caffeine do you drink a day? have you modifird tyour eating habits in the last few weeks? both of these are huge for me. cant go over 16 oz of coffee a day and am loaded with lots of vitamins as well.  maybe its something easy and not medical?

just looking from another angle. hope you have a nice day

Hello and welcome,

I am only 9 months post op so I can't help you too much with symptoms returning as I am still working on getting rid of many. However, I did want to say that I noticed issues with my memory getting better after the surgery. For some reason though, I do go through spurts where I seem to have those problems back. Sometimes, I think that I have just gotten so used to it that I have accommodated well (I make lots of lists) and as long as I'm organized and in control, I don't forget things. As soon as I let go of that or a wrench gets thrown in the plans...then things start to slip away. This happens with stress or if I just have to much to do. Other times it has to do with when I feel more pressure in my head and I just can't think straight. So I guess what I am saying is that I think we are more susceptible to memory loss even after having surgery. If you haven't seen a re-occurrence of other symptoms, I would try not to worry too much:)

Take care
Carolyn

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

I am soooo glad to hear u had such wonderful results.....but knowing there is no sure, u had a very long reprieve from symptoms of ne kind.

My first thought is to ask, when u had ur last MRI...just to be sure u r not experiencing something related...scar tissue....or a syrinx....something that may have gone unnoticed?

Or, it could be that ur chiari was triggered by something and is re-herniating.

For ne one with memory issues there are small puzzles and games to help with memory....outside of that I am lost as to what to suggest.

U r too young for Alzheimer's.....but do look at family history as well.
