shaking with chiari malformation

Hi! My boyfriend has chiari malformation, he was diagnosed at a young age and needed surgery for it when he was 15/16 years old. S (my boyfriend) has being experiencing shaking with his hands for a while now. He experiences mood swings, headaches and shaking in the hands. Is this normal?
Before S has a shake he has mood swings where he is happy at one point and the next he isn't himself and can get grumpy.
He has being to his doctor a  numerous amounts of times and they have tested him for diabetes and epilepsy.

I was just wondering if anyone who does suffer or knows any one that does suffer from epilepsy if they experience shaking in the hands? It has only being in the hands and no where else in the body.

Please, let me know if you have and if you have being told anything about the shaking.

Thanks a lot.

Hi SelmaS,

Hope your okay and thanks for replying again. He went to the NL this morning and they are sending him for an MRI scan just to be on the safe side and rule things out.

Hope it is positive news!

Tell him to try a hat with a brim and sunglasses, I have always needed both on a very sunny day as long as I can remember...even going into the pool with both....not sure why we have this issue with light but many of us do.

It is good he is seeing a NL as they are the ones to DX and figure it all out.....keep us posted on what u find out : )

Hi SelmaS.

It has being 6 years since his operation on his head and two years ago he had an MRI scan.
He does have mood swings and shaking in the hands and fingers. He has being to his doctor about this and they have transferred him to a neurologist. The neurologist said they think it is subconcious anxiety but we don't understand how it can be due to the other symptoms such as mood swings, tiredness, memory problems and brain fog.

He is seeing the neurologist again soon to try and get ECG scan. S pretty much collapsed in a shop his mum works in and when he came around fully he did say whilst he was walking up town to the shop he seemed slightly effective towards light. However, he didn't think anything of it due to him not being out of the house for most of the day so he thought it was him getting adapted to the sunlight.

Hopefully, it will sort out!
Thank you so much for replying. Means a lot.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

It is possible for some with Chiari to develop epilepsy post op , some have it b4 surgery...so it is not out of the realm of possibilities.

However, the shaking or tremors can also be from a related condition like Ehlers-Danlos*....

There are many possible things that could be going on, those with Chiari are also prone to develop auto immune issues, one being Hashimoto's thyroiditis...which can affect moods.

and we also are prone to connective tissue disorders like EDS* since our connective tissues do not work properly our muscles have to work harder to help hold us together since the tissues are not doing their job and we can experience tremors which is really muscle fatigue.

I had this for yrs where I could feel it, but the tremor could not be seen, now it is more obvious and is visible....especially if my arm is bent and I am carrying something even a coat or phone book...at one point even my smallest pot would shake all over when lifted with one hand....

Has S had a recent MRI? How long since his surgery?
