9 year old feels worthless

My son is a great kid. He has lots of friends and is doing excellently in school.  Here is my problem, for some reason, he feels worthless.  He said that he doesn't feel this way all of the time but that he feels it mostly and it has become normal.  To quote him, "he never feels happy."  I am extremely concerned about him and am debating taking him to his doctor to see if is "clinically" depressed (ugh).  I am trying to find out what brings on the sadness but he can't put his finger on it.  Has anyone else dealt with this? Is this normal for a 9 year old?  Could it be the hormonal changes of maturity?

I don't think its really normal for a child to be unhappy most of the time. Teenagers/ pre-teens can be "irritable" or "angry" but mostly at their parents:) Not with friends, and not all the time.

You should see his dr, and probably ask for a referral to a child psychiatrist. Depression/ anxiety is treatable, but as you know, rather dangerous if untreated. Better safe than sorry, I always think.
