My 3 year old is wetting himself

Hi,
After reading some of your posts I know Im not the only one in this boat. My son started potty training August 2009 because he started asking for his potty. He did really well and only had a couple of accidents......until January 2010 then he wet every time he needed to go to the toilet and is still doing it. I have had his urine tested and there is nothing medically wrong. We thought it was because he started in Foundation Stage at nursery but he settled in really well and he went in with some of his friends. Then his nannan died in February. Still 7 months on he wets himself. Ive tried sticker charts and Ive tried ignoring it (I find it very hard to ignore now as it could happen 6 times a day although I know this is what I must do) He's only done it about 10 times at school though. He's never has an accident with poo.
The other day he urinated in the bath :( and the last couple of days he has done it outside in the yard :(  If he is doing it for attention thats what he is getting (WRONG ATTENTION !!!!!!!).
I am quite calm and ask him why he didn't go to the toilet . He says "Because I didn't" then he laughs in my face which is what makes me angry.
I know he can do it because he did it for 5 months last year.
He is 4 in September and Im at the end of my tether.

Im just glad I found a forum where I can discuss things with other people.

Nice to meet you all

Amanda

Hi miyah,
My son has been a lot better since he finished nursery for the holidays. My partner told him if he started being a big boy and stop wetting he would add another game on his PSP. He isn't doing it half as much although nothings changed really apart from finishing nusery for the holidays.

I am with you on the taking things away and the pull ups my daughter was not bothered. She hates the pull ups so she says, but she will still wets them. The only thing that works the most for me is when I ignore her all day and give her the silent treatment, but we as mothers are nurturers and how long will it last. I just wish I knew what exactly was going on with her. She started in November 2009 stopped the entire month of March. I just found out I am expecting a new baby in January which makes my conception time around the time she started regressing again. I am wondering is that her problem now? I hope that you have found some answers, because I know it is extremely stressful!!! Good luck!!

Thanks for your comment unfortunately I have made him wear pull-ups and told him when he stops being a baby he can take them off (He just used them as a diaper !!!!)
I dont know if things are different in the US but we are not suppose to punish children for wetting it makes their anxiety worse.
I have tried putting his favourite WALL-E trousers on but he still wet them......SIGH.
I think I will go back to ignoring it and not making eye contact with him so he isnt getting any attention.

When potty training my grandson, Barney the purple Dinosaur was the big thing.  I bought him big boy underwear with Barney on them and told him not to pee or poopie on Barney, and every time he went to the potty he'd come running to tell me he didin't pee or poopie on Barney! He never had a single accident.  Unfortunately this didn't work for my youngest grandson.

I had that same problem with my son. I took toys and did the tv thing it didn't work he just got used to the pull ups and started using them like a diaper. Finally i asked my mother  to come over and i handed her a pair of underwear. she told him that the underwear were hers and if he had to go pee he needs to use the potty. if she came over and he urinated in her underwear she would be very unhappy because they were her underwear. he finally started using the potty had no more accidents. If you do try something like this make sure your child adores the person it worked for me but it may not work for everyone.,

Hi Amanda, and welcome!
I would put pull-ups on him and tell him when he starts peeing in the potty like a "big boy" again, then he can go back to wearing his big boy underwear. They are all about their "big boy" underwear at this age. You can also try taking away a favorite  toy telling him that when he starts peeing in the potty, he will get it back. You can also tell him that if he goes all day with peeing in the potty he will get a special treat, get to watch a favorite movie, etc.  You can also try telling him that if he pees anywhere but in the potty, no TV for the day.  They are so clever at this age, and will try anything to push your buttons.  Good luck and take care.
