Child waking up in the middle of the night

My 18 month old son suddenly woke up in the middle of the night at 2.30am and started crying loudly for apparently no reason. All our attempts to soothe him were in vain. He was neither going to his father or to me and was just running around the house crying loudly and moving aggressively almost in a self destructive method. He kept pointing his fingers in all directions and we gave him everything he pointed at. He would take the object/toy and throw it away and start crying again. He didnt seem to be crying in pain. But I am unable to explain the nature of his cry. He seemed to be badly upset about something.

This same incident happenend again today in the morning at 6.30 am. The period of crying extends for half hour and then he falls back to sleep. Is there any problem with him? What is the solution for this kind of crying bouts?

This is a "night terror."  Your son isn't even awake during this and soothing does nothing, the best you can do is make sure he doesn't hurt himself.  These normally last 20-30 minutes and then he will either wake up or go back to sleep.  They are caused by a lack of sleep so make sure he is getting in a good nap or two during the day.  They're scary for us, but he is unaware of what is happening.  I'm sure it scared you and your husband, but he is fine.  So, just make sure he gets in a good nap or even two at this age and they should stop.  Take care.

yes I agree this sounds like night terrors, it isnt unusual, if you can calm him thats good , say nothing much just soothe him then he will go back to sleep.
