Help with my dogs ckf diagnosis.

My 17 year old woofer has just been released after three days of being in the vets. The diagnosis is not good. I have the blood results I understand shes anemic through it. I need help with being able to provide the best possible care with diet till I escort her up to the bridge. She's definitely not herself. Although she is responsive, drinks and passes water. Eating is a major issue. We brought her home as the fluids hasn't reduced the counts  as much as we would have liked and the vet said more may have helped may not. She was incredibly stressed in there as we have never left her alone overnight. Slept beside me always.  She refuses all prescription food,  But will still eat some small portions of cooked chicken. Any help greatly appreciated. I am at a loss of what to do next? Many thanks

Hi. It's very important for your vet to diagnose the type of anemia - regenerative or non-regenerative (the latter being more likely), as that will dictate the type of treatment for it. Don't waste any time in getting your vet to to this

What anti-nausea medication has your vet prescribed? If any.

Portions of cooked chicken are not ideal, although can be sustaining for a short time. Only use human-grade (high quality protein) chicken and not dog food chicken. Also, use dark meat of chicken like the legs and thighs, as this has less phosphorous.

Try to encourage canned kd dog food like Hills kd, as that will help reduce toxin build-up and improve kidney function. Also, try to feed very small meals (literally a couple of desert spoons) every couple of hours. These smaller meals help reduce stress on the kidneys too.

Are you now doing SubQ fluid therapy at home? If not, this needs to start right away - talk to your vet. If SubQs are not done, the good work achieved by the IV fluids will subside very quickly. SubQ fluids are effectively maintenance and may need to be done daily for the forthcoming weeks - and possibly months.

Have a read of my article below - and ask any questions you may have when you have read it.
