Hi. Great that fluid treatment is being done ... I'm hoping hat your vet is using Lactated Ringer fluids, unless sodium blood levels are low, in which case saline solution would be better. The fluids (IV) are the best way to get control of the abnormal blood levels. At least 3 days of IVfluids are needed, followed by a month or two months of SubQ fluids. Talk to your vet about undertaking this at home (they will need to teach you how to do it). Blood tests will be needed after one month of SubQs to assess whether another month is needed.
Five Leaf has varied reports. Personally, I think the company make some false claims about their product, including that it can restore the kidneys - that is a physical impossibility. Once the kidney organs are damaged, the tissues cannot be restored. Personally, I would forget it. I think the ingredients are pointless and expensive.
I would consider a few supplements that might help ...
Pure salmon oil has the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids, which is excellent for the kidneys. Half a teaspoon every other day would truly help things. However, as salmon depletes Vitamin E in dogs, you will also need to supplement with a canine vitamin E capsule along with the salmon oil.
CoQ10 is another useful supplement and has some evidence that it helps in human renal disease (no dog studies have yet been undertaken). Worth trying.
Ascorbic Acid can be given to help replace lost Vitamin C. Don't give standard Vitamin C supplements though, as they contain calcium which you don't want to give extra of (unless blood results show low calcium levels).
Rehmannia 6 or 8 is a herb that is said to have positive effects. Again, worth a try.
Diet is a major key to getting things under control. A good quality kd diet dog food, such as Hills kd canned, is probably the best option right now. Feed 6 small portions a day (the total per day equalling the recommended amount for your dog's breed and weight). These smaller portions will help avoid stressing the kidneys with too much food (and therefore too many by product toxins) all at once. Alternatively, you can home cook. This is more complicated and you ill need to research the best food ingredients - mainly high quality proteins (human grade meats and poultry) and low phosphorus elements such as sticky rice and tapioca. Also, add a desertspoon of cooked chopped green cabbage (a fermentable fiber) every alternate day, as his will help prevent ulcers forming in the stomach (a typical symptom in canine kidney failure).
Okay. That's enough for you to think about for now.
