Severe Sinus Pain - Not sick?

So I've had a bit of a cold these past few days, but nothing severe at all. Headache and sneezing and my nose runs slightly, but overall just a very mild cold. However, my sinuses and the congestion in my head is unbearable. It has gotten to the point where I can't tilt my head down too far or bend too low to the ground because it feels like my head is going to explode. This happens often when I get sick and the sinus pressure will remain for up to two weeks. A few years ago I had a very bad sinus infection and I'm wondering if maybe there is damage? I take decongestants and they don't help at all :(

If you are persistently getting blocked and infected sinus problems, it may be a good idea to see your doctor to be referred to an Ears Nose and Throat Specialist.

It sounds like you have a head cold at the moment with blocked sinuses.
Taking decongestants long term will not help.

You are better off to do steam inhalations to unblock the sinuses.  To do this, boil up a kettleful of water and pour this into a fairly large bowl (taking care not to get scalded).  Put in some Vick or Olbas Oil or any menthol oil that you like.  Bend your head over the bowl of water and cover your head and the bowl with a large towel.  Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.  Do this for a duration of 10 minutes 4 times each day.
My doctor gave me this advice, because I am not able to take any decongestants.

The steam inhalations will help loosen up any congestion allowing it to drain away from the sinuses and the Eustachian tube.

ENT specialist would be able to do checks to make sure that there is no deviation that is hampering the mucus to drain.

You may also find antihistamines may help as the congestion may be due to an allergy.  A nasal spray short term can also help to decongest the nasal passages and sinuses.

If the doctor feels that you do have a bacterial infection, he/she would prescribe an antibiotic.  Antibiotics do not work for congestion from allergies or from viruses.

Whist you are having this problem, keep off dairy products (milk, cheese) and drink plenty of hot drinks - honey and lemon and good.
