Viral stuff going around

I went to a walk-in clinic last Friday out of shear misery with a virus.  Lots of drainage yet stuffy at times, a cough that was driving me crazy and keeping me awake, so I was incredibly tired.  But really I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything MORE than the typical stuff that goes around because all they can talk about on the news are a couple local people, otherwise perfectly healthy and young (40-something & 50-something) that have died recently, one from H1N1 and one from a heart attack after many weeks of fighting the flu. The PA told me to keep taking the Musenex and instead of Benedryl (which I told her I'd also been taking), take Sudafed.  Well, a couple things...

First, I just noticed this morning that the Musenex (which is really Walgreen's version of it) HAS 40 mg of the Pseudoephedrine in it, and here I've been taking two more of the Sudafeds, so another 60 mg.  That doesn't seem right, so I'm stopping the Sudafed today.  I didn't realize the Musenex had that in it, and maybe it's just a version of it, but I think the PA should have pointed that out out to me.

So next is this - would there be benefit or not to taking Benedryl at this point?  I have Benedryl allergy, and I'm just thinking that I believe this all started as a sinus infection, as I'm sure I have allergies (4 cats, a dog and about 350 plants in my house, some of which are blooming at any given time...)

At this point, my drainage is back to normal for me.  (Some might consider it excessive, but they are sinus issues I've had all my life, so it's normal for me...)  I still have some chest congestion and I'm still coughing quite a bit, but I feel all of that is heading in the right direction.  But a couple things concern me.  I have a rattling sound in my right lung, which I really only notice/hear when I've very still, like trying to sleep or sitting quietly.  But I can "feel" it as well as hear it.  I assume this will pass with time and it's nothing to worry about?

The other thing is my right ear.  As soon as I started to get this, my right ear got "stuffy" feeling.  My hearing was somewhat muffled.  So I tried cleaning out my ears, which I try to do periodically.  Some peroxide for a few minutes a couple days in a row, and another day, I used some of those earwax drops in it.  It's only gotten worse!  I can barely hear out of that ear, and it's kind of been ringing - not exactly "ringing", but a sound I don't know how to describe, kind of a "hazy" sound.  And I'm dizzy at times.  I haven't done anything since because I thought maybe I did more harm than good.  But since it's on the right side as well as the lung thing, I'm thinking maybe it's just an indicator that all of this is more on the right side of my head/sinuses??

Please offer any advice.  Oh, and I AM drinking a TON of water, which I know is helpful...

Thank you so much for your help, MKH.  I will take your advice.  The rattle already seems to be better.  Right now, it's a noise in my right ear when I exhale that's driving me crazy - keeps me awake.  The PA said my ears look fine, except for some irritation, but there's definitely something going on down in there.  I'll leave it alone and wait for time to heal it.

Hi and sorry you don't feel well.
1. Yes I wouldn't use both the Sudafed and the musenex. Yes they should have noticed this. I've had PA's make many drug mistakes me too.
2. Did the PA listen to your lungs? I think if it was serious they would have heard the rattle.  I wouldn't worry about that yet..
3. All the stuff about your ear is due to it being clogged. It will drain with the antihistamine. They like you to take the pseudafed because it does clear the ear sinus faster but personally I can't take it. But take either one type of pseudafed or Benedril. The ringing will clear I would leave you ears alone unless you have the doctors clean the wax out  The ear drainage or possible infection is causing the hazy sound and the dizziness. You just need rest and to dry up the ear without putting anything else in it.
