Virus, Flu? Unsure UK based advise needed.

Hi,

For the past 12 days I have had what seems to be a virus. I went to the doctor Tuesday as I was suffering with:
mild headache
Coughing up green mucas
Stuffy nose
Both ears are blocked and cannot hear
Chest pain
Upper back pain from coughing...that's what I thought.

She told me it was a virus and didn't give me anything. She checked my chest and said it was clear and looked in my ears and said there was no redness swelling etc. Said try breathing in steam etc etc

Over the next day or so I started to feel very weak and tired. On the Thurday I vomited what only can be described as stomach bile (bright orange with chunks of dark mucas inside) and have had diorrea since that day also.

It's now Sunday, I still have diorrea, I just almost threw up as a large chunk of green mucas was coughed up about the size of a 50p...My ears are still fully blocked, I can't hear my children or my baby crying in the next room, the only thing I can hear is my voice and my heartbeat.....

Is there something nasty going about the UK at the min,,,,I'm thinking if getting an emergency appointment at the doctors tomorrow. My nose is still blocked and when I blow it's thick and clear but I'm coughing up green stuff.

I have no headache or fever...

Not sure what this is, but my ears are bothering me the most as I don't know if it's that that's making me dizzy and giving me a general off balance feeling....

Yes, I would have to agree that you have a nasty virus. The fact that your mucus is green is a good sign.  If it turns bright yellow then it has evolved into a secondary infection. There are some over the counter products that can help with your symptoms until you body gets an upper hand on the virus. I will give you the branded names of the products here in the USA and and the generic name when possible (not sure if branded names are the same in UK). First product you want is Mucinex D (guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine). This product will dry out your sinuses and help clean your Eustachian tube that runs from your nasal cavity up to your ears (this is where your ear pain, balance issues, and hearing problem come from). This product will also thin your mucus to help you get it out instead of being so thick that coughing is a chore with little effect of getting it out. If you cannot find Mucinex D, then try to get each ingredient separately if possible. If sleep is an issue then look for a product called NyQuil. It should only be taken if you are home and ready for bed. It will make you sleepy.  Here are the ingredients of NyQuil: Acetaminophen (325 mg/15 mL) (pain reliever/fever reducer)
Dextromethorphan (15 mg/15 mL) (cough suppressant)
Doxylamine succinate (6.25 mg/15 mL) (antihistamine)

The diarrhea will resolve as the virus subsides.  Use some Pepto Bismo if you want some relieve from it a little sooner.

I hope this helps.
