Diverticulitis and healing

Sorry if this isn't quite the right forum but it's close and I figured you all have been through something similar.

Normally I have no digestive problems. Monday night I woke up with sharp cramps. Tuesday things only got worse. I ended up in ER with all the usual treatments. They did a CT scan and said I had diverticulitis. What a nasty little surprise. They did an IV bag of Zosyn, sent me home finally with plenty of metronidazole  (QID) and SulfaTrim (BID).

The intense abdominal pains have eased but now I feel like I have the "stomach flu" - just cramps, gurgling, nausea and watery stools every hour or so. Is this part of the improvement and healing from diverticulitis or is it part of the meds?

Yes, I'm eating low fiber foods for a few days as directed and yes, I'm eating yogurt twice a day.  I just don't look forward to 8 more days of this. An encouraging word please?

Thank you for your response. I completely understand the waves of sharp pain that you had since that's just what sent me to ER.

The instructions are easy - take with food, drink plenty of water, no alcohol. Not unusual. Side effects are standard - nausea, headache, all the general possibilities. Then the dangerous things listed after that - swelling, trouble breathing, etc. No mention of watery diarrhea but I know antibiotics mess with the natural bowel flora. Just never had this before. And the nausea is getting worse. Tonight my husband steamed some veggies and I had to leave the room. Later he ate a couple of corn chips and the smell got to me. It was like being pregnant all over again. No thanks.

I'll do a copy/paste of my question on the GI board and see what happens. Thank you again.

This community may be able to help you out.....as I could not find a specific community for "diverticulitis" either......I have never had it.....but something similar when my bowel became perforated....however with crohn's disease my immune system took over and creat a fistula over the hole......(abscess)...which further complicates things with crohn's and I was in extreme pain from that.....similar to waves of pain like having contractions when giving birth....the pains would increase and then decrease to nothing and then back up again.

I am not sure about the medications that you are taking but you could possibly research the side effects of them .....and/or ask your pharmacist.....Do they not give you a paper when you get medications listing all the dos & the don'ts and the side effects, etc....

I hope you feel well soon.....and find the forum that can help you.....hugs and take care
