Weight gain related to Crohns?!

Ok, I know usually you lose weight with Crohns, although I never did. Recently I was wondering if I was having symptoms showing the Crohns had returned (I've been in remission). But recently I feel like I've gained weight! It's crazy. There's no reason for it. My eating hasn't changed that I can think of. I haven't actually weighed myself but I feel real bloated in my belly and just feel like it's sticking out and just feel so bleh, like I'm pregnant or something! It's all in my belly too. I've been thinking and thinking and I know I've taken some steroids a few times for my inflammation in my heel and I've heard steroids can make you gain weight but I haven't taken a huge amount or anything. Why do I feel so bloated in my belly? Is this the Crohns or could it be intestinal related at all? Anybody got a clue?
For the most part I eat pretty healthy. I just don't get this.

Yeah, I've wondered sometimes if I'm heading into perimenopause or something, lol, with the emotions and stuff. It does seem like I cry easier anymore and my husband gets on my nerves more, lol. Maybe it's just part of being a woman! I'm 44, so we're close in age.
I haven't figured everything out either. I've been taking steroids off and on because of an inflammation in my heel right now that just won't heal! It's been almost a year. It's so aggravating. I feel like I'm falling apart sometimes and I never had any health issues at all up until about 4 years ago! Ugh. Getting old s u c k s. Lol.
We should all stay in touch and be there for support. It's hard to talk about this to friends and family sometimes because they may not understand or really want to hear it all! Take care, ladies. Let's keep in touch, ok! God bless!

I wish I could say that I have figured out what I can and can't eat. But even after 10+ years with this disease, I still am not sure. Sometimes I will tolerate a food for a while, then all of a sudden it doesn't work for me anymore. I know fresh fruits and vegeables are supposed to be a no no, but I can eat carrots till I'm orange and I'm ok. I try to avoid dairy because I also have IBS....but I am a cheese-aholic. I have found that I tolerate certains kinds better than others....go figure!
If you think you are headed into a flare, you should get in to see your Doc.....better to catch it earlier before it gets way out of control. I was on and off of steriods and antibiotic for over a year trying to get my last flare to be just manageable. I am not on the highest dose of Remicade every 4 weeks. That flare took its toll. I ended up with a rectovaginal fistule. The increased dose of Remicade is supposed to help (possibly heal) that. So far, a year later, it hasn't done a thing for the fistle, but has really gotten all the other symtoms more under control.
I soooo understand what you and lovethebops mean about wondering if other issues are related to the Crohn's. I sometimes think the doc tell me that because he doesn't know what else it could be. I've gained so much weight, I feel bloated, my joints still ache ...even with the Crohn's under control, my skin is more of a mess now than when I was a teenager (I'll be 40), and I'm being treated for depression because my moods are all over the place. Have you ever not been able to stand being around yourself? Lol. It seems like a never ending list a sharp pains here and dull nagging pains there. What I wouldn't do to feel "normal" again.

lovethebops, sorry! I almost didn't see your post. Thanks so much for writing! I'm doing ok, not bad considering. How about you? How are you doing?

I know what you mean! Like I started having some more blurring in my eyes, especially the one, and it makes me wonder if it's related! I've heard it can affect the eyes but I don't know. So I know what you mean about wondering about everything now and wondering if it's related to the Crohns. It is an autoimmune disease so I guess it can affect all kinds of things. Are you doing ok? I know you were wondering if it was indeed Crohns. I totally understand. I went through that for a couple of years. Really, I was in denial. It wasn't till last Summer when they finally sent me to a specialist who explained why he thought it was Crohns that I realized it really may be that after all! I've had two pathologists and a specialist now who told me because of the granulomas in the mass makes it highly probable that it's Crohns. Didn't you have those granulomas too? I seem to remember that. I do understand everything you're going through and wondering about, etc. Just know I'm here if you ever want to talk. Take care!

Finally, someone who understands! I know exactly what you mean. I feel bloated and "yucky" a lot. I just wish I could go back to feeling good. :( I do remember what that felt like. It wasn't that long ago. I keep thinking there's got to be some kind of diet or food that will help. I keep trying to figure out what foods might trigger things. Some foods I have figured out. As much as I love McDonald's hot and spicy chicken sandwich, I cannot eat that without suffering the consequences big time the next day, lol. So no more of those. Really, any fried foods. I rarely eat them but when I think I might have a craving and give in to it I regret it, even if I'm careful and just eat two onion rings or something, thinking that will be ok. Nope.
I'm actually not on any medication right now. I probably need to see the gastro doc again since I think I'm having some symptoms again. The had me on Entecort last time and probably will want me to be on it again. I don't want to do any medicine that will make me gain weight. I'm not sure I've actually gained weight, maybe a little, but it feels like it, especially in the belly. I just feel so bloated and blah a lot. It's not a good feeling. Even when I try to eat healthy, like salads, I don't do so well. I know I shouldn't eat salads but once in awhile I do just because I do like them but I usually get a pretty good bellyache afterwards. Sigh. I wish I could eat what I like and I wish I could figure out what's ok to eat. I've been trying things here and there. I think I do ok with fish and chicken. Some fruits and veggies are ok if I don't overdo it. I like the whole grain breads but I'm starting to think they might cause some problems too. I do better with tea than coffee. Like I said, I'm still trying to figure stuff out. How about you?

Hi April.
I have gained so much weight in the last year......blown up to 280 lbs.   I have been on Remicade for my Crohn's. The doc keeps telling me that this will not cause weight gain. I still don't eat much and am still going to the bathroom at least 2 times a day. Yet the weight keeps going up.
Even before the major weight gain and more since......I always have that bloated feeling. It doesn't seem to matter how long it has been since I've eaten, I always have that full, blown up feeling. And (excuse the bluntness) passing gas does not relieve the feeling.
If you come across any information on how to eliminate this, plase post and let me know. It can be so uncomfortable.

Hi April. I have never taken steroids, but I have heard that it can cause bloating, mostly in your face, but anywhere I suppose. How have those pains been? Better?

Again, as a newly 'diagnosed' patient, I am constantly wondering what is related to Crohns, or if even the symptoms I do have is really Crohns. I am going in 2 weeks for my second opnion, Finally!! (The 2 month wait is nearly over!...I have been torturing myself since my colonoscopy!)

I am still questioning my diagnosis, big time, but I finally feel like I will be getting help for what I am dealing with.

I really hope you are feeling better!

Bops
