Blacks outvoted whites in 2012

Washington (CNN) – A new Census Bureau report provides more evidence that the changing demographics of the United States are having a deep impact at the voting booth.

The report on the 2012 election found that for the first time on record, black voters turned out to the presidential polls at a higher rate than whites. More than 66% of eligible blacks voted in the presidential contest that pit President Barack Obama against Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Only 64.1% of whites turned out to vote.

The report was released Wednesday.

This the first time since 1968 that blacks turned out at a higher rate the whites.

In addition to blacks turning out at a higher rate, the number of Asian and Hispanic voters grew from 2008 to 2012. Hispanics added 1.4 million people and Asians added over 500,000. Between 1996 and 2012, blacks, Asians and Hispanics all saw their percentage of the voting population increase.

"Over the last five presidential elections, the share of voters who were racial or ethnic minorities rose from just over one in six in 1996 to more than one in four in 2012," said Thom File, the report's author.

The highest turnout of blacks, in addition to the growing number of Hispanics and Asians, could also explain Obama's success in defeating Romney.

According to CNN exit polls, 93% of African-Americans, 71% of Hispanics and 73% of Asians supported Obama over Romney.

I had a problem with Cain when the information came out about sexual harassment.  I would not have voted for him!

I don't know if I'd use the words "better man" to describe our president.  We don't know how the people he ran against would have done as president as they never made it to that position.  I voted for both of the people that ran against Obama because I thought they were better choices.  A few more people voted for Obama than the people I voted for so he is our president.  But I think that the people he ran against were good men too.

Herman Cain

Cain grew up in Georgia and graduated from Morehouse College in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. Cain pursued graduate studies at Purdue University, and graduated with a Master of Science in computer science in 1971, while also working full-time for the U.S. Department of the Navy. In 1977, he joined Pillsbury Company in Minneapolis where he later became vice president. During the 1980s, his success as a business executive at Burger King prompted Pillsbury Company to appoint him as chairman and CEO of Godfather's Pizza, in which capacity he served from 1986 to 1996.

Cain was chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Omaha Branch from 1989 to 1991.He was deputy chairman, from 1992 to 1994, and chairman, from 1995 to 1996, of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. In 1995, Cain was appointed by Newt Gingrich to the Kemp Commission, and was a senior economic advisor to the Bob Dole presidential campaign.Cain became the CEO of the National Restaurant Association, in which he served as president and CEO from 1996 to 1999. During the Presidency of Bill Clinton, Cain publicly opposed the Clinton health care plan of 1993, about which he questioned the president at a town hall meeting. Cain has served as a member of the board of directors of several companies, including Aquila, Inc., Nabisco, Whirlpool, Reader's Digest, and AGCO.

Herman Cain was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Lenora (Davis) Cain, a cleaning woman and domestic worker, and Luther Cain, Jr., who was raised on a farm and worked as a barber and janitor, as well as a chauffeur for Coca-Cola Company president Robert W. Woodruff. Cain has said that as he was growing up, his family was "poor but happy." Cain related that his mother taught him about her belief that "success was not a function of what you start out with materially, but what you start out with spiritually". His father worked three jobs to own his own home – something he achieved during Cain's childhood – and to see his two sons graduate.[

Cain grew up on the west side of Atlanta, Georgia, attending school and Rev. Cameron M. Alexander's Antioch Baptist Church North in the neighborhood now known as The Bluff. Eventually Cain's father saved enough money and the family moved to a modest brick home on Albert Street in the Collier Heights neighborhood. He attended Archer (public) High School, graduating in 1963.

Cain married Gloria Cain (née Etchison), of Atlanta, soon after her graduation from Morris Brown College in 1968.His wife of 43 years is a homemaker, with experience as a teacher and a librarian. The couple have two children and three grandchildren.

In 2006, Cain was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer in his colon and metastases to his liver and given a 30-percent chance of survival. Cain underwent surgery and chemotherapy following the diagnosis, and has since reported that he is in remission.

Now, this is compelling material from Herman Cain.

"Who is the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan?"

"OK, Libya. President Obama supported the uprising, correct? President Obama called for the removal of Gadhafi. I just wanted to make sure we're talking about the same thing before I say, 'Yes, I agreed' or 'No I didn't agree.' I do not agree with the way he handled it for the following reason — nope, that's a different one. I gotta go back and see. I got all this stuff twirling around in my head. Specifically, what are you asking me that I agree or not disagree with Obama?"

"The more toppings a man has on his pizza, I believe the more manly he is ... Because the more manly man is not afraid of abundance ... A manly man don't want it piled high with vegetables! He would call that a sissy pizza."

Herman Cain is far from a buffoon. He is a brilliant businessman. Read his story sometime, more compelling then a community organizer.

I was speaking of Cain who ran in the Republican primaries. He is a black man and he is a buffoon.

I noticed a lot of people having a hard time with a black man showing himself clearly to be the better man.
Damn shame. :)

The one who points the finger is often the racist himself.

"most people of color saw that"-Oh so the millions of blacks who voted for Obama did so because they saw McCain a buffoon? Give me a break. It had nothing to do with McCain as it had to do with Obama's skin.

Joe Biden vs John McCain. Biden does not get the turn out Obama does.

Cain wouldn't have been elected had he made it past the primary.
He is a buffoon and most people of color saw that.

Face it Vance, with all his faults (I do not deny them) Obama as not the better man, he was the *only* man.

If Obama had regular black turn out things would have been vastly different. If people voted for Obama based on his experience he would not have been elected. If people didn't vote for Obama because he was "cool" he would not have been elected.

So yes he was voted for, for several reasons.
1. Liberalism
2. Race
3. Cool
4. Insane
5. Catch phrase

The day after the election 2008 I was in Vermont for my work in a woman's home who was talking on the phone and she was insane. She kept calling her friends saying how great it was he was elected. And he was going to hold town hall meetings and really listen to people like her. And they were going to get him even further to the left. So he got the insane vote also.

It is what it is now, but don't try to minimize the fact that without his skin color that his election might not have happened.

I'm sure Obama was voted into office for a variety of reasons.

I agree sm.
I have had friends who said said they would vote for a woman no matter what and I never understood their reasoning. Women are capable of being corrupt, narrow and stupid too. Of course that was a few decades ago, before Palin and Bachman.

Obama could not have won by the black vote alone. He won the popular vote because people felt that he cared about all the people and is intelligent and fair-minded.
No, he is not perfect. Sometimes I am very pleased other times bitterly disappointed. But that is the way of politics, I suspect.

I doubt anyone would be thrilled to think they have their job for some superficial reason like skin color or sex.  Then again, if it gets you where you want to go then so be it.

I'm a white middle aged woman.  I can't really relate to how it would feel to have centuries of being held back and how good it then would feel to see someone you relate to your own self burst forth through a barrier. I am guessing that sure would feel wonderful.  Now, I'd never vote for a woman just because she was a woman if running for president but I'd cheer her on for doing something that no other woman has ever done.

I'm sure Obama was voted into office for a variety of reasons.

THEY WERE NOT SUPRESSED, STOP BELIEVING THE LIES. I'm sorry I don't want people voting if they are voting on race alone and that is why the black community had record turn out. That is not a reason to elect a President.

Tends to happen when one tries to interfere with their right to vote! Good for them! Im glad they did. Now try to suppress them some more and see it happen again!
