Right. As long as the link in our memories still works~lol.
I can see where a lot would be lost in translation and it's true that interpretation has a lot to do with both the Bible and Quran. There are those who believe the Bible teaches death and destruction, rather than love and tolerance.
"Or maybe what I've read/heard is the fanatical side of Muslim belief?" Seems to be the case.
See we can talk about, and learn, things, even when we don't have the proper link....
Go do a search, it's intriguing.
Hmm. That is curious. I actually know quite a few practicing Muslims, and all tell me that Allah is simply their word for God. And what OH says is also what I have been told, that they believe the Q'aran to be purer due to the language. However, just like the Christian Bible, much of interpretation can be due to who is doing the reading, and no doubt some prefer to twist words to suite their own personal agenda. Same is true in all religions I suppose. Ok, way off topic, but the last part of the conversation piqued my interest.
I can't really speak for Muslims in general.
I'm not Muslim though we made some Muslim friends while traveling. Not surprising, the Muslims in Thailand were more like all Thai people than the Muslims we met in Turkey, for example. Nationality or tribe seems to affect people's behavior more than that of religion.
My reply to you was more along the lines of language. I live in an area with so many immigrants from many different countries.
It seems logical that a person who speaks more than one language would use the word for god in both.
Allah is indeed the same god, to Muslims as the god of the Jews and Christians.
The reason Muslims consider the Quran to be a purer word of God ( as delivered to the prophet Mohammed) than the bible, is because it is read in the original language it was written in.
All bibles have been translated and things do change with translation, if only because of the difficulty to find words with the same meanings. Some words simply cannot be translated perfectly from one language to another.
But I'm digressing.
Years ago I read an English version of the Quran. I did not find their version of God to be any harsher than the one I grew up with.
An interesting thing which surprised me though was to find references to Djinn as in Genies.
Yes, I thought Allah was the Muslim term for God, but I didn't realize that Muslims used the terms "interchangeably". I thought we did "God", they did "Allah" and from what I've read Allah is not so benevolent as God. Or maybe what I've read/heard is the fanatical side of Muslim belief?
I thought Allah was their word for God but maybe it's like hearing Spanish native speakers talk first in one language, then speak in another.
Like if I said "I like gatos, aren't cats great".
Whew....... I thought I'd lost my mind, or transported into a different thread through no will of my own......... lol
I guess we can discuss the article WE read....lol..... I thought it was quite interesting and I was surprised to see the comment by the Muslin, Yasir Qadhi that "Allah never burdened the soul with more than it can bare." I say that all the time....... "God never gives us more than we can carry". I was almost disappointed not to see my other favorite, which is: "God brought me to it, He will get me through it".
I was confused by the fact that Qadhi, referred to, both, God and Allah. I thought Muslims believed only in Allah.
Me too. I thought it was about these guys faith being shaken. Didn't catch the other references to gays at all.
Did I miss something? The link posted above took me to an article titled:
"Hurricane Sandy Presents Complex Questions About God For Clergy And The Faithful As Victims Cope"; it was really quite interesting.
Didn't see anything about anyone in opposition to the Catholic church, gays, etc. Should there be a different link?
Oh, found it. I'm going back to the fact that I have a head cold and can't comprehend.
Rats. I need a title for this one too. Sorry.
I couldn't follow anybody like this... Just couldn't.
She is finding herself in opposition of the Catholic church on a few issues. Basically one of the deacons down played it and said it was no big deal. I don't get that either. "It's okay to be gay in the eyes of the church, but it's not okay to act on it." WTF?
