Failed on soda, now going after smokes

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/18/nyc-anti-smoking-plan-tobacco-view_n_2901164.html

First off, I'd like to say that I am not a smoker.  I do find it offensive and obviously it is no good for your health.  I'm pretty sure that every smoker in this country understands that, especially when they start to cough up a lung.

What I wanted to get to though was this..... What kind of fiscal shape is New York City in?  Are there no other issues there for Bloomberg to address?  I mean... go after the rat infestation or something, guy.

I think we all know that sugary drinks, smoking, french fries, etc are not good for us, but is it really up to the mayor of a city to decide that?  Isn't education much more effective than mandates?

I doubt seriously that a mayor trying to dictate size of sugary drinks or smoking issues is hardly a slippery slope.  We have a lot more important issues to worry about (like possibly another war), but by the same token, one person should not get to decide how much sugary drink a person can have.  What difference does it make if I drink a 48 ounce sweetened drink or if I sit in my kitchen and eat a cupful of sugar or a dozen cookies/donuts, couple of pies, etc. Where does it end? As nygirl said "I'm telling you if the dude bans donuts or pizza he'll find out what a fight really is.".  I've never been a donut/sweets eater, but both those, pizza, sugary drinks and all those other "goodies" are now off my menu.  No skin off my nose, but there is a principal involved.

The smoking issue is a bit different - there aren't so many different types of smoking materials, and smoking has been banned in a lot of places already.  That's really only going to bother the smokers.

Please, is this the slippery slope I hear so much about?
I am not buying that one bit.
What scares me is war and talk of war and not that a mayor tries to limit the size of a poisonous beverage to a paltry 16 ounces.

Hm.  I'm not sure that there was ever a question about whether soda is good for somone.  I'm thinking lots of what you find on a menu isn't good for people.

So, maybe New York will go after eliminating french fries next?

Or is it our right to eat a fry?  Should we only have 10 fries to a plate?  Should resturants have that mandated?

I dont drink soda either I am just sick on Mr. Mayor arbitrarily just deciding what people can and cant have. I'm telling you if the dude bans donuts or pizza he'll find out what a fight really is.

Thank you for that, Mike.
Just because it is FDA/USDA approved doesn't mean it is not harmful to your body. I have always considered sodas wasted calories at best
