Hm. I guess that's good, right? I would want my family with me for sure. Would they be self sufficient or are they granted all rights of citizens to partake in things like food stamps, public housing, etc? Do these students stay here or leave after they are done with school?
"Would they be self sufficient or are they granted all rights of citizens to partake in things like food stamps, public housing, etc?"
A snippet from the article
"The House proposal would allow family members to come to the U.S. one year after they apply for their green cards, but they wouldn't be able to work until they actually got the card. It applies to the families of green card holders who marry after getting their residency permits.
Bruce Morrison, a former Democratic congressman from Connecticut who chaired the House immigration subcommittee and authored a 1990 immigration law, said the bill neither increases the number of green cards nor gives people green cards early. But people "get the most important benefit of being able to live legally in the United States with their spouses."

The spouses are already working and living a productive life here. They are granted those "things" now....I don't think food stamps, public housing etc are just "all rights of citizens"...... This probably wouldn't get passed in the Senate but it does show the repubs are serious about immigration reform....Immigration reform will get passed soon. Both parties want to do it so I have no doubt that it will get done...
I'm just asking to see if I read correctly. You don't feel that things like food stamps, public housing, etc. should be for American citizens but should include anyone in the country?
" You don't feel that things like food stamps, public housing, etc. should be for American citizens but should include anyone in the country?"
If they are in this country and in need of those things, yes..I feel none should starve or be homeless citizen or not. Especially if they are working but just can't make ends meet like many Americans..
Respectfully, I'd have to disagree with your last statement. I think that "giving" to those that are not American citizens is part of what's got us into this debacle revolving around immigration reform.
I think both sides of the political spectrum want reform but the ideals are so different. I think that if anyone is going to come to this country, they need to be able to be productive immediately. They need to be able to pay taxes and pay into the system before they can take from said system.
As it stands to me, this is just more hand outs before we are putting money in the coffers. We are spending it faster than we make it.

YES!

YES again!!
Reform is necessary, for sure. I'm all about encouraging people to come here and become a citizen, but like brice said, to be eligible for certain "entitlements", they need to be a productive, tax paying citizen of this country.
Sorry, it may sound crude, but we SHOULD be selective about WHO is allowed to immigrate here. We have enough people who are starving who ARE US citizens...those people are the ones entitiled to the gov't help. I'm not saying let the other people die or anything...but I don't agree they should be eligible to receive gov't aid.
I immiants are found homeless on the streets, the action should be to deport them, and allow their own gov't to help them get on their feet.
That is my whole stand on immigration. We just can't invite the world here and foot the bill. There has to be something else we can do. Heck, start anywhere but discontinue giving money and food away.
Like NG said, we've already got starving and homeless here. We don't need more.
