I would only add that while these high capacity magazines were banned before, not one person lost their 2nd amendment rights, nor will they if they are banned again. imo
restrictions on guns is not the only approach. The solutions will involve a balanced approach starting with enforcing the laws already on the books, making background checks more extensive and wait times longer, mental health issues will also be addressed. The commission that was appointed to investigate and come up with answers were directed to come up with a multi faceted plan and if I understand it correctly, the president can and will use his congress given powers of executive order to implement some of these things. With that said the president also said it takes the american people being on board in order for him to accomplish anything.
This focus on guns and the criminal element gets old. There is a larger picture here.
I hear you..it is a combination of factors and they all need to be addressed.
I think I said this on another thread, so at the risk of sounding like a broken record....
I kind of think the push for gun control is missing the bigger picture. Regardless of how you feel about gun control, no one can dispute that those that do these types of horrific mass murders must be seriously mentally ill. Wouldn't the bigger and better solution be dealing with how that is handled? I don't pretend to know the answers, but maybe it's something like easier access to mental health care, or make it easier to have someone formed (committed) and the burden of evidence lighter. I just can't help but think someone saw red flags and either the system worked against them in getting help or there was some sort of fear associated with speaking out...something like that. Maybe the answer lies somewhere in the health care system. Something just has to be wrong and I personally feel that might be where the real solutions lie?
You're still not good with the fact that the kid stole the gun, right?
Total assumption. Hypothetically speaking you say that he "might not have been able to murder so many of the grandchildren...." . Using that same hypothetical analysis, he could have been Timothy McVeigh and removed the entire neighborhood from the block from the general populace.
If his mother had not been able to obtain an assault weapon, Adam Lanza might not have been able to murder so many of the grandchildren of some of my oldest friends. In my opinion, any measure that restricts possession of assault weapons is worthy of consideration.
And that is going to stop someone who wants to commit crime? Wonderful idea.
My idea (and I am sure it is not original, some legislator has probably brought this up) is that in tightening the gun control laws, not only the people who buy guns will be carefully checked out (and trained) but anyone living in the home.
Of course there are still many ways a person can get access to a gun illegally and while that too needs to be addressed it should not be an obstacle to tightening the laws concerning legal gun ownership.
The problem is that he didn't obtain it legally. (Actually the real problem is that she didn't have it properly stored and that is another subject.) He stole the gun. Criminals break into houses and steal guns all the time. (Where else are broke, crack head, gang bangers going to get them?) Those guns are consequently frequently used in crimes.
And at one point in time, a most of them were "legally obtained".
By "legally obtained" I mean that the weapon was obtained by a collector from a gun dealer, in compliance with the law.
We need to start with what is sold legally and deal with the illegal issues as well, but not *after* we have dealt with the sale of legal assault weapons.
It is the only way to inch forward on this issue, imo.
And try to count all of the gun deaths occurring daily in our metropolitan areas by illegal guns.... We really don't hear about this.
"Legally obtained" would mean that that gun was sold to that individual or gifted. All of the news reports are saying the gun was his mothers. That is theft.... not legal anywhere in the United States.
The Bushmaster .223 used to murder the 26 at Sandy Hook Elementary was legally obtained.
The assault weapons ban will do very little if anything. Brady was shot with a .22 revolver. They enacted the ban on guns and hi capacity magazines and gun crime was still there. This proposed ban or whatever it is will only affect anyone who wants to legally obtain a gun.
Criminals will still be as armed as they've ever been.
This will be an "I told you so" moment.
Rush Limbaugh, the Tea Party and now Alex Jones.
People are running away from these 3 like they're on fire. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
None of the 3 deserve any airtime.
I think those of us that are gun owners agree that this whack job does NOT represent us..
Why would Morgan say a word? This guy had a complete melt down on national TV. Saying anything would have taken some of the gravity away.
I heard this story about 4 times last night dragging in from New Mexico. That old boy blew an o ring.
I reckon the good news for guns/gun rights advocates is that none of my gun buddies now the man.
I agree. Nothing Piers can say could make a stronger argument for renewing the assault weapons ban than this lunatics ravings.
That is the wisest way to go with these folks. Let them run their mouths, give them enough rope to hang themselves, so to speak.
I think it was great that Piers let him go on an on. He just melted down to the point where he was a complete raving maniac. Now, if he is the face of the pro-gun movement the anti-gun movement is going to have a much easier road ahead.
