YANGON, Myanmar — Barack Obama became the first serving U.S. president to visit Myanmar on Monday, trying during a whirlwind six-hour trip to strike a balance between praising the government's progress in shaking off military rule and pressing for more reform.

Obama, who was greeted by enthusiastic crowds in the former capital Yangon, met President Thein Sein, a former junta member who has spearheaded reforms since taking office in March 2011, and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The trip is intended to highlight what the White House has touted as a major foreign policy achievement - its success in pushing the country's generals to enact changes that have unfolded with surprising speed over the past year.

I don't quite get your post to Vance.  He didn't make any outrageous, conspiracy theory type claims...just a little sarcasm, meaning he probably didn't see this as a big accomplishment??

Yeah, so what is the big deal? He is visiting countries, then I hear he is going to take another tour around the country talking to the people regarding this deficit stuff? I bet he is off having an affair with someone as we speak! I will just betcha! After all didn't we just hear how him and his wife was on the verge of divorce? Or maybe its Michelle who is playing around! Maybe we can make big money like some of these so called news people do by starting our own rumors instead of furthering theirs! And did you guys see where Obama poured that cup of water over the little budha? OMG! He is Hindu now! I just cannot believe he cannot make up his mind! First muslim, then christian and now he is out there doing the hindu thingee! Oh, I think he prayed at the wall in Jeruselum too so add jew to that list.

Having visited Burma, or rather Myanmar twice, I know this is a wonderful human relations step. I also saw where he visited Thailand the day before. Thailand is our friend and Obama helped to improve our image.

Not sure how this helps us here at home.  I guess as far as a "human rights issue abroad" this is a step in the right direction.  Now, if we can start getting our nations veterans the help they need, feed the poor in this country, get the banks regulated, create some jobs, get the economy moving along a bit better....  That would be forward, to me.
