Who benefits from Keystone ? Why the Koch brothers !

Building Keystone XL Pipeline Could Mean Roughly $100 Billion in Profits for the Koch Brothers, New Report Reveals.

San Francisco, CA — On October 20th, progressive think tank International Forum on Globalization (IFG) released a report investigating how owners of Koch Industries, Charles and David Koch, will benefit should President Obama allow the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built. The report, entitled Billionaires’ Carbon Bomb: The Koch Brothers and the  Keystone XL Pipeline, reveals Koch Industries likely substantial interest in the controversial pipeline. Staggering numbers punctuate the report; in recent years it has been reported that the Kochs hold up to 2 million acres in Alberta, could earn roughly $100 billion in profits from the project, and have spent more than $50 million on congress and think tanks that heavily push for the pipeline.

The Kochs have long been one of the largest players in the tar sands region of Alberta, Canada. The report connects the Kochs’ 50 year history and large footprint in the Canadian tar sands to the current debate about the pipeline. Since the Kochs are big players, it stands to reason they will be big winners when the pipeline gets built. IFG crunched the numbers and puts forth a compelling answer to why the Kochs have used their influence networks to push for fast-tracking of pipeline – $100 billion in potential profits.

Other Findings in the report include:

The Kochs could earn 1 million times more than the average worker of the pipeline.
Evidence suggests The Kochs alone be responsible for over 19 billion metric tons of carbon emissions in their tar sands holdings.
Think tanks funded by the Kochs have released nearly 1000 pro-KXL reports or statements.
Kochs have already made billions from insider trading and stand to do that again with tar sands.
Koch Industries has a history of violence against people and the environment.
The Koch Brothers seek to alter the public debate and control the policy debates in Washington.

“The Kochs have repeatedly claimed that they have no interest in the Keystone XL Pipeline, this report shows that is false.” Said Nathalie Lowenthal-Savy , a researcher with IFG. “We noticed Koch Funded Tea Party members and think tanks pushing for the pipeline. We dug deeper and found $100 billion in potential profit, $50 million sent to organizations supporting the pipeline, and perhaps 2 million acres of land. That sounds like an interest to me.” Nathalie continued, “We all know they will use that money to fund and expand their influence network, subvert democracy, crush unions like in Wisconsin, and get more extremists elected to congress.

“The past two weeks of the government shutdown brought to light the irresponsible influence of Koch-funded groups,” said Bold Nebraska Director, Jane Kleeb. “Rewarding the Koch Brothers with Keystone XL, who at every turn fund campaigns to mislead Americans on everything from climate to gas prices, is like the President advocating for Sen. Cruz to be the Majority Leader. It makes no sense. Farmers and ranchers in Nebraska are depending on Pres. Obama to see our national interest is not served with a pipeline that lines the pockets of climate deniers and foreign oil.”

At least your honest and it's obvious you don't have kids or grandkids.

Tar sands oil is one of the dirtiest, costliest, and most destructive fuels in the world. Unlike conventional crude oil, unrefined tar sands is hard to extract, and in order to mine this resource, oil companies are digging up tens of thousands of acres of pristine forest in Alberta, Canada and leaving behind a toxic wasteland.

Extracting tar sands

    Destroys enormous amounts of important ecosystems in the boreal forest;
    Produces lake-sized reservoirs of toxic waste;
    Releases toxic chemicals when it is refined in the U.S. and Canada;
Emits significantly more global warming pollutants than fuels made from conventional oil.

Tar sands negatively impacts wildlife

Migratory birds are one of the most negatively impacted by tar sands development. More than half of U.S. birds spend a large part of the year outside the United States and many of those birds depend on habitat in Canada for survival. As the tar sands industry in Canada continues to expand, this places a direct threat on migratory bird species.
What Happens When Tar Sands Pipelines Break?

Not only is the development of tar sands destroying Canada's ecosystems and our global atmosphere, but transporting this dirty fuel to U.S. markets has also proven to be extremely dangerous, unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Exxon Mobil Pegasus Pipeline (Mayflower, Arkansas) - On March 29, 2013, an Exxon Mobile pipeline carrying tar sands oil from Canada burst in the middle of a residential area in Arkansas, sending thousand of gallons of heavy crude oil through neighborhood streets.

Enbridge Line 6B Pipeline (Kalamazoo River, Michigan) - In the summer of 2010, a ruptured pipeline dumped more than 1 million gallons of raw tar sands oil into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River, poisoning people and wildlife for miles around. It is known as the largest freshwater tar sands oil spill in U.S. history.

Missed by ONE vote...

As for this pipeline being a toxic environmental nightmare... wrong. Studies show that it'll be cleaner than a Toyota Prius, and actually be GOOD for the environment.

(I made that last part up. I have no clue about whether it'll be good/bad for the environment or not, and frankly don't care. I go where the money is, and if it'll generate revenue and create jobs, I'm all for it. Let the next generation(s) worry about the environment. As long as it's okay for me, I'm good with it)

Most of what I've heard is that the oil from this pipeline will be exported. Even Obama said it will be exported, This is not for domestic use.
Why should we put up with a potential toxic environmental nightmare so the oil companies can make more money ? It's nuts. Time to stop the madness but that won't happen with a congress bought by big corporate money.

There's Been HOW Many Pipeline Spills in Alberta in The Last Four Months??

Alberta, Canada is basically a petro state. Oil and gas production rule everything and it's happening everywhere in the north of the province. Pipelines criss cross most of Alberta. As a result, leaks of wells, facilities and pipelines are a constant thing all over the province.

But we Canadians almost never hear about them. Our main media, CBC, does not provide any coverage of the many, many spills and gas releases that happen every month, nor the efforts to clean up the messes. They're simply not considered news...at least not on the scale of disasters like some attention grabber showing up at the War Memorial on Remembrance day in uniform and bedecked with medals..none of which (uniform included) belonged to him. The guy is under arrest for impersonating an officer.

But back to the non news. It seems someone is taking notice. West Coast Native News (WCNN) has been quietly keeping tabs on all the spills and leaks. What they have found is shocking!!

More past the toxic orange spill...careful you don't get any on your shoes!!

The WCNN is reporting on all the spills and natural gas releases and have kindly provided the incidence reports to back up their claims

Over the past year WCNN has reported on many Crude oil and Toxic produced water spills all over Alberta, in fact we have reported over 600,000 Litres of toxic crap that has been spilled just last month and yet not one mainstream media outlet has picked up the incidents. So lets take a look back at just the last month (October) and see just what the mainstream is not telling you.

Oct 3, 2014 – Canadian Natural Resources Limited – 11Km East of Delia – 10,000 litres of Crude oil
Oct 5, 2014 – Nexen Energy ULC – 2.5Km SouthWest of Kinosis – 5,800 litres of Toxic water
Oct 5, 2014 – Cenovus Energy Inc – 56Km East of Brooks – 9,800 litres of Toxic water
Oct 5, 2014 – Nexen Energy ULC – 41Km SouthEast of Ft. McMurray – 13,000 litres of Condensate
Oct 10, 2014 – Husky Oil – 30Km SouthEast of Vermilion – 50,000 litres of Crude oil and 25,000 litres of toxic water
    Oct 13, 2014 – Arc Resources – 5Km North of Redwater – 150,000 litres of Toxic water
Oct 11, 2014 – TAQA North Ltd – 44Km SouthWest of Spirit River – 24,000 litres of Crude oil
Oct 14, 2014 – Whitecap Resources Inc – 37Km NorthWest of Sexsmith – 10,000 litres of Toxic water
Oct 15, 2014 – Penn West Petroleum Ltd -14Km SouthEast of Slave Lake – 52,000 litres Crude oil
Oct 14, 2014 – Zargon Oil & Gas Ltd – 26Km NorthWest of Vauxhall – 8,000 litres of Toxic water
Oct 17, 2014 – TAQA North Ltd – 32Km NorthWest of Rocky Mountain House – 18,000 litres of Toxic water
Oct 21, 2014 – Harvest Operations Corp – 20Km East of Galahad – 200,000 litres of Toxic water
Oct 26, 2014 – Apache Canada Ltd -9Km East of Zama City – 50,000 litres of Toxic water
Total = Over 625,000 Litres of toxic crap spilled in Alberta for just the month of October and not one Mainstream media reports about it.

https://sheet.zoho.com/...

Curious, I went back to July, August and September of this year, and found that October's incidents weren't unusual at all!! In July, 27 incidents were reported --16 of which involved pipelines spilling either crude oil or gas production. August saw 39 spills or releases happen, 28 of which involved pipelines. September--26, of which 22 were pipeline spills or releases. October-- 41 total incidents ( 24 pipeline incidents).

The grand total for four months....133 incidents of which 90 involved pipeline spills....68%!!!!

What is produced water that is mentioned in the incident reports? OilfieldWiki states that it is  either water mixed with the oil as it comes up from the ground and from two sources: with the oil, or separate from it...OR..it's injected fluid.

Sources of this water may include flow from above or below the hydrocarbon zone, flow from within the hydrocarbon zone, or flow from injected fluids and additives resulting from production activities. This water is frequently referred to as “connate water” or “formation water” and becomes produced water when the reservoir is produced and these fluids are brought to the surface. Produced water is any water that is present in a reservoir with the hydrocarbon resource and is produced to the surface with the crude oil or natural gas.

I regret to say that due to my non-existent maths skills, I can't calculate the volume of the spills into liters for you all. Perhaps someone else can do the maths for me.

I have provided an interactive map of Alberta here so that anyone interested in seeing exactly where the spills have happened can do so.

I noticed that in the report of an incident document, every single report mentions that no effects to wildlife or waterways occurred... WHAT?? How can spilling even a small amount of oil not affect the soil and water, and in turn affect the wildlife. Even the removal of the contaminated soil will have an effect. This is the kind of glossing over important facts that happen when there is only self-reporting done. No-one follows up or studies the results. And no-one calls them on their shoddy reporting.

It shouldn't need to be said, but those who think that putting a pipeline that carries oil, dilbit, or natural gas over any agricultural, environmentally sensitive or heavily populated areas should have their little heads examined. Pipelines are neither safe nor infallible. I see the US House of Representatives have passed a bill to allow the Keystone XL to be built and used...folly...sheer idiocy!

Okay, so what I'm reading here, is that part of the pipeline is already built... that would be the portions between Steele, NE and Cushing, OK and between Cushing, OK and Nederland, TX.  That's 40% of the total pipeline and Keystone is only a very small fraction of the pipelines we have throughout the U.S.

Here's a map I've been looking at, as well:

Without question we are exporting refined fuels, can't export crude.

Here is a site for pipeline maps;

(there is a legend at the bottom)
direct link to a map (indicates lines coming from Canada

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/investigations/north-dakota-considers-new-rules-make-rail-transport-oil-safer-n248136

"North Dakota's energy regulators are considering new rules to make the state's "Bakken" crude oil, which has been involved in a number of explosive train crashes, safer to move by rail.

Proposed standards announced Thursday by the state Department of Mineral Resources follow a series of fiery rail accidents over the last 18 months that have made ballooning number "crude by rail" shipments highly controversial across the country.

The new standards would require oil producers to remove volatile gasses from the crude oil before loading it into rail tankers. That would make the cargo far less explosive in the event of an accident, according to state regulators.

"Our crude oil leaving North Dakota will behave like the gasoline you put in your car," said Lynn Helms, head of the Department of Mineral Resources.

The North Dakota Industrial Commission has the final say on the proposal, which North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who sits on the commission, called a "working draft." Members said they supported the adoption but wanted more information on enforcement and violations, according to a press release. The commission will take public comment through next week, then hold a special meeting in November to consider the final draft order, which could take effect as soon as Feb. 1."

$2.99/gal. and less in hyper-regulated, environmentally (semi)friendly N. California. Down into the $2,60s/gal. in Midland, Tx. where they pump it, truck it, and refine it all in your own backyard. You get to smell it and buy it up close and personal.
And casual observation suggests jobs in fracking, drilling, refining, and trucking aren't all going to 'documented' Americans, no more than the 50% undocumented that keep the Texas building trades bustling.

Rail shipping can be made safer, Americans could be put to work right now  by enforcing laws already on the books. And we can still get our cheap fix of fossil fuels.

I have to do some more research; I was under the distinct impression there was an existing pipeline.  Do you have links to where one could go for information about this?

I was also under the distinct impression that the refined oil would not be kept here in the United States, but would be sent overseas where it would bring more money.

I also believe North American energy independence would be a good thing.  Having Mexico,Canada and the US tied together by a network of pipelines, rail and barge would provide energy security for future generations.

"What's wrong with the pipeline we already have"..currently that pipeline is actually composed of rail cars carrying crude. My personal opinion is it is much safer transporting these petroleum products via pipeline infrastructure rather than rail.

I don't think we gain the extra energy... like RGlass, I've heard that the oil will be refined here, then sold on the world market, where it will bring a higher profit.

Jobs?  Maybe if the refineries have to hire additional labor?

I'm on the fence about the pipeline, as well.

What's wrong with the pipeline we already have, other than the fact that it doesn't go all the way to the Gulf of Mexico?

Also- I hate to bring this up but the only chance she has is rallying a high Black Voter Turn Out. I think since the Republicans already took the Senate there is going to be a low turn out at the polls. If she can rally the Black Voters to vote, she will have a chance. But they are tired of her broken promises and only showing interest around election time.

No, Obama all ready Threw her under the Bus by promising a Veto (Reed could have sat on it until after the Dec. elections). Cassidy's entire campaign was she voted 97% with Obama now he is turning his back on her, which basicly put a nail in her coffin. The Democratic Party has also wrote her off by canceling her campaign contributions. The elections are less than a month away. Cassidy also has a Keystone Bill going before the House which makes an approval moot. It is safe to say, Mary is history. I use to be a supporter of Mary but after 18 years, she is not the same Senator she used to be.

House Moves Forward on Keystone XL Pipeline

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-moves-forward-keystone-xl-pipeline-n248736

"The Republican-led House approved the Keystone XL pipeline for the ninth time on Friday, with the Senate poised to vote on the measure next week in an effort to boost Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s re-election chances........"

So. Deal with the Devil. If the Senate Democrats sell their souls this time around, will it get her elected?

I bounce back and forth on the Keystone Pipeline issue. It seems I read that all we are going to do is Refine the oil in the U.S. then sell it overseas.
Does anyone know if this is true?

If it is true, I don’t see how this will help our dependency on foreign oil and don’t see how the end will justify the means.

Also, if it is not true, and we can keep the Refined Oil for ourselves, how much will it help ease our dependency on foreign oil?

This maybe a little off topic but also raises a series of questions-

The pipe for Keystone XL was bought from India, to be installed by Canadians, to pump oil that will be used overseas. What we get is some foreign-made pipe of questionable quality running across the heart of our farm land.
Woohoo.

What we need are people with the intelligence, intestinal fortitude, and integrity of the indigenous peeps in this video to block these projects.
