Cory Booker Slams Drug War
Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker took to Reddit Sunday to criticize the war on drugs, saying it was ineffective and "represents big overgrown government at its worst."
"The so called War on Drugs has not succeeded in making significant reductions in drug use, drug arrests or violence," the Democrat wrote during the Reddit "ask me anything" chat. "We are pouring huge amounts of our public resources into this current effort that are bleeding our public treasury and unnecessarily undermining human potential."
Booker then called drug arrests a "game."
"My police in Newark are involved in an almost ridiculous game of arresting the same people over and over again and when you talk to these men they have little belief that there is help or hope for them to break out of this cycle," he wrote.
Booker has said he supports medical marijuana, tweeting in May that "NJ should do more to make it real for those who need it."
Booker also used the Reddit discussion to outline programs he has implemented to lower drug arrests: reentry, court reform, jobs, treatment and legal aid.

Vance's reply brought up two unrelated laws as examples of bad law. Whether he meant the context of how they were written or the very idea of the law, is unknown to me. He didn't explain it.
I thought he was stating opinion as fact.
You know Vance from other forums and have formed an opinion of him because of those experiences. I have only seen him here often coming across as angry and combative.
I was already annoyed with him for referring to my source as "whoringtonpost" which was removed by the moderator.
I know mikesimon as a compassionate man who assisted me in a time of great need on another forum. He's been so helpful to so many. I have formed an opinion of him from my experience.
Remember that recent discussion we all had about birth control?
There was one woman who could not accept the idea of abortion, no matter what. Others were in full support. Some fell somewhere in the middle.
There was no name calling, no dragging in unrelated topics, no judgment.
All I want is for us to act like adults, and behave respectfully whether we agree with each other or not.
