New Mexico is offering free tuition for residents for state's colleges. Okay there aren't too many of them in that state .. .but still. Wow, I'm ready to turn political parties for the sake of my children's education. :>)
I'm not sure how I feel about all the "free" college tuition, etc... we all know free isn't really free because somebody has to pay for it but we also know that our kids are the future and they need an education but many of them can't afford to get through high school, let alone a college or university.
I don't know the best way to do it, but if they could figure out a way to provide help instead of making them rack up huge debts for education so that they start off their working lives with debts they may never be able to pay off. Another thing is that there needs to be access to more non-college education, such as trade schools, etc. There's a need for people in various trades (electrical, plumbing, environmental, etc) but they need training to do the work as well.
Because not everyone is college material, I believe some of this type training could actually begin in high schools so some students could be ready for jobs when they graduate.
Of course, first and foremost, they need to start actually preparing students better. I know kids coming out high school that don't even know how to read or write properly yet - IMO, they not only aren't ready for college, they aren't ready to meet the world.
There are several candidates promoting free college and even if one of them is elected to the Presidency, I'm not sure how far they'll get with that agenda. Maybe the cost of a decent education will go down, even if it's not free.
What I cannot understand is this. How do people not know what they are getting into when they get a college loan? How do they not understand debt? Why aren't more kids looking into trade schools? I'm sorry, but free college? I don't get it. Most of these kids that get into this giant debt issue have had a free public education and still don't know or understand how things work... kind of tells me something is wrong with the education they got before a higher learning institution. Now that is going to be free? Do these kids a favor and just send them home with a popsicle....
