Cheney sisters feud over gay marriage

Cheney sisters feud over gay marriage

Thanksgiving at the Cheney house may be a bit uncomfortable this year.

Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President **** Cheney and a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming, said on "Fox News Sunday" that she opposes same-sex marriage. Her younger sister, Mary Cheney — a gay married woman — was at home with her wife watching the show.

"I love Mary very much. I love her family very much," Liz Cheney told Fox News' Chris Wallace. "This is just an issue in which we disagree."

Mary Cheney took to Facebook to respond.

“Liz — this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree," Mary Cheney wrote. "You’re just wrong — and on the wrong side of history.”

The sisters haven't spoken in months.

Mary Cheney’s wife, Heather Poe, also responded via Facebook.

"Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 — she didn't hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us," Poe wrote. "To have her now say she doesn't support our right to marry is offensive to say the least."

Poe also took a thinly-veiled swipe at Liz Cheney's relocation from northern Virginia to Wyoming to seek public office — a move that has led some to call her a carpetbagger.

“I can’t help but wonder how Liz would feel if as she moved from state to state, she discovered that her family was protected in one but not the other,” she wrote. “Yes, Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law.”

Liz Cheney is seeking to upset Wyoming Republican Sen. Mike Enzi in a primary next August that has drawn national intererest. **** Cheney supports his daughter's candidacy, but doesn't hold her "traditional marriage" view. In 2012, the former vice president lobbied the Maryland state legislature to legalize gay marriage. Lynne Cheney, Liz and Mary's mother, supports same-sex marriage, too.

According to the New York Times, the Cheneys will be celebrating Thanksgiving at Mary and Heather's home in Virginia. Mary Cheney told the paper she assumed Liz Cheney would be staying in Wyoming.

I've never seen anything that looked the least bit genuine from Liz Cheney....or her old man.

I honestly believe this is exactly how Liz feels.  I don't really think this is just about politics.  I believe it is genuine... she just isn't for gay marriage.  I think she is that stubborn.

I hope Wyoming sends her packing.  Everyone here complains about the east coast people coming in and changing things.... We'll see.

I still don't buy it.  I find a feeling of betrayal between sisters in this scenario to be much more believable than it all just being a plot to further someone's career.  Just my opinion though.

Maybe that's where I got it - from you. I realized it immediately when you pointed it out and was trying to figure out where I got "John".

No sweat.  I referred to him as John in a post not so long ago.  I've even met the guy.

Yep, sorry about that - Mike Enzi.

I think you are referring to Mike Enzi.  Liz in true Cheney fashion will let nobody stand in the way.  Including family, of course.

The purpose is to establish her position to the right of incumbent long time conservative John Enzi - and that's not easy. I guess Liz figured that if she stabbed her sister in the back that just might do it.

So much for not airing their dirty laundry in public? I think that as experienced as these people are in playing politics, that it is hard pressed to think this is NOT purposely done. Even the dumbest and most illiterate among us knows you dont air your personal info on facebook. I find it hard to believe that they would be ignorant to that fact, and thereby I think it is being done for a reason. What that reasoning is? Beyond me!

I wonder if these same people call Hillary Clinton a A Carpetbagger?

There are two possible explanations for our difference of opinion about Cheney.
1) We have distinctly different moral values.....or
2) We have a very different understanding of our recent history.

I strongly suspect it is a difference of our understanding of history and not our morality.

I will refrain from recounting the whole 9/11 - Iraq War debacle but I respectfully suggest that a close reading of history will show that Cheney was one of the key players who lied us into war. The evidence is really quite clear on that issue if one looks at it objectively. However, I read recently that 69% of self identified republicans still believe that Saddam had ties to al-Qaeda and that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. This despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. And I really don't get that at all.

Hm.  Okay.  Well, I don't have disdain for Cheney so that might be the difference.

I don't know much about the children but I do know about the farther and he is a one despicable human being. Words cannot express my disdain for that man. And I have found that generally the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree so I don't expect a lot from either of the siblings.

I would imagine that the issue does cause some family tension.  I doubt it is contrived.  That is speculation and probably written by someone that is not a fan of the family.  One of the things I liked about Cheney was his support of his daughter.  I don't want these empty politicians that don't delve into the complexity of the issues but just pick a side to be on.  I would imagine that the Cheney now trying to run for office is stuck in the politics game saying what she thinks she needs to.   But I find it hard to believe that two sisters would agree to a public feud to bolster someone's campaign.  But that is just my speculation which is about as valid as the writer of the article saying the whole thing is contrived.

I hope they are able to put it aside and be a family for Thanksgiving.

I hope that this state is smart enough to keep this Cheney way, way away from Wyoming politics.  I don't know that I am all that great of a fan of Mike Enzi, but we do not need another east coast person coming into Wyoming, telling us what we need.

Liz and Mary Cheney: Real Feud or Cheney Family Machinations?
Posted: 11/18/2013 8:31 am

When Mary Cheney first spoke out back in September against her older sister's position opposed to marriage equality, I must admit I suspected this spat might possibly be contrived. Liz Cheney, in yet another arrogant action by a Cheney family member, decided to move to Wyoming and try to topple sitting GOP Sen. Mike Enzi, who's running for reelection next year. Coming from the Washington, D.C., suburbs, Liz needed to establish herself as a moral crusader in deep red Wyoming. What better way than to have a public feud over "family values" with her little sister who is married to a woman and raising two children? And Mary has always thought nothing of stabbing fellow LGBT people in the back, helping to elect GOP candidates with anti-gay positions. Could any of us put such deception past any Cheney?

**** and Lynn Cheney have been gunning for anyone who gets in Liz's way. Lynn took down good old family friend, former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, reportedly telling him to "shut up" after he publicly supported Enzi, and then, according to Simpson, lying about it. If indeed it's not all staged then we're to believe that the Cheneys are not only attacking loyal friends; they're throwing one daughter under the bus to help another.

Not a pretty picture either way!

And now it seems to have become just a bit too raw to be orchestrated, with Mary's wife Heather Poe getting involved too. When Liz, on Fox News over the weekend, claimed once again that she does "believe in the traditional definition of marriage," both Poe and Mary lashed out on their Facebook pages separately. Wrote Poe:

Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 -- she didn't hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us. To have her now say she doesn't support our right to marry is offensive to say the least.

It's one thing to have a disagreement on marriage equality, but it's hard to see how it helps Liz for Poe to describe her as a blatant hypocrite and a liar. A seemingly angry Mary, dropping the "I love my sister but" preface of before, shared her wife's Facebook update and added that Liz is, "just wrong -- and on the wrong side of history."

But it's pretty damned rich for Mary Cheney to be furious at her sister for supporting an anti-equality agenda when Mary worked her *** off to reelect George W. Bush, who ran on passing a federal marriage amendment and helped fuel bans on gay marriage that passed in state after state. Mary has since given thousands of dollars to anti-equality candidates across the country, including to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign in 2012, all while living in Virginia with her then-partner and raising a family.

Eventually, Mary Cheney reaped the benefits won by hard-working gay activists whom she helped beat down for years, legally marrying in June of 2012 in Washington, D.C., which passed marriage equality in 2009. Selfish and bloodthirsty like the rest of the family, Mary had no problem enjoying LGBT rights others fought for in her own backyard while she donated money to strip the rights of her gay and lesbian brothers and sisters elsewhere.

So, spare us if we see the attack on Mary by her actual sister as a bit of karma. Whether it's all real or not, Liz looks supremely craven and just plain vile: a politician who will do anything to get elected, including either creating an elaborate false family feud or attacking her own sister's wife and children though she'd previously supported them. It's unclear how any of this goes down in Wyoming, where Liz is 52 points behind Enzi in a poll commissioned by a super PAC running ads against her. But the August 2014 primary is nine months away. That leaves a lot of time for many more Cheney family machinations to come.
