"Maybe I am going to hell. :) " I told you that a long time ago and you got mad!
Discriminated against not discriminated... I hate errors I cannot go back and fix.
I just noticed I have been using the metaphor of flames a lot lately. Maybe I am going to hell. :)
Although state laws vary, current statutes permit federal prosecution of hate crimes committed on the basis of a person's protected characteristics of race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability. (and homelessness)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_crime_laws_in_the_United_States
I agree that if someone is attacked because he is Caucasian that would be a hate crime.
What I object to is the *emphasis* on what is perceived as unfairness as if whites are routinely abused and discriminated.
Yes it happens but it is not a common occurrence. To focus on that in my opinion is to fan the flames of racial hatred..
Happier? Perhaps. Fair? Not a chance. I vaguely remember the scenario you described above rivll. This is a new era though and things, as you mentioned, have come a long way. Still not fair however. Hate crime legislation isn't a two way street yet, and the nations biggest supporters of hate crime legislation will not come out when a hate crime is purported upon a "white" person.
We went from a simpler time when assault was assault, battery was battery and created hate crime legislation because minorities were not getting a "fair shake".
If this crime does not fit the bill for being a hate crime, I give up on hate crime legislation.
Some years ago in Crown Heights, NY there were high tensions between the blacks and Hasidic Jews. There was a car accident and a black child was killed and the people rioted for weeks. The Hasidic Jews fought back and the media called it racial tensions and blamed the "Jewish vigilantism."
I am well aware of what you are talking about. I was there.
I saw a number of things, poverty (of both groups), bigotry (of both groups) and a misrepresentation by the liberal press.
In the past decade, there has been much improvement in the relations between both groups. There is a neighborhood watch that includes blacks and jews and they meet plan and work together. The Hasidic groups (who are quite insular) and that take care of their "own", now take care of all in the neighborhood in a crisis.
I saw a lot of hate and prejudice on both sides. I also saw a lot of goodwill. The good has been in the balance and while nothing is perfect, it is a much happier place.
A buddy of mine from New Orleans sent me this link. Interesting. All I can say is HATE CRIME. Turn this situation around and the news in Baton Rouge would have it labeled as a hate crime in about 2 seconds.
Here's the proof we live under seperate rules. No wonder Crime runs Rampant.

"We need to focus on what is good in people, in all people." I agree!!! Although it seems as if these attackers are immoral and lack any compassion, they probably do make wise use of their time by volunteering with the old folks home.
I may take you up on it Glass, be careful. :-)
We need to focus on what is good in people, in all people. This divisiveness just feeds the flames of our discontent.
If you would like to test your record. Come on down here for a visit. I'll drop you off in an area. Be sure to have your affairs in order.
Yes, that was in our beloved New Orleans. When you watch these reality shows about La. it leads you to beleive we're about alligators, Crawfish, Festivals, etc. These things are true but they fail to mention, we are probably the most violent of all the States. If you ever come to Baton Rouge or N.O., don't get off the beaten path. The Gas Station where this happened at was an exit off the interstate where you can actually see the State Capitol.
This is a disgusting story and it is true that no race or ethnic group is above this sort of sickening behavior.
However, I have lived in parts of NYC that were predominately black and low income and I live in Oakland in a low income neighborhood. I have found myself the lone white person in many neighborhoods many times and in my lifetime I have never been assaulted by a black person.
I was once viciously attacked by a white man, but I do not take from that experience that white men are particularly violent.
Let's be sensible when others are not. Please.
I think people are going nuts, and it seems to be getting worse. I also heard on mothers day that there were shots at a mothers day parade wounding something like 14 people! At a freaking parade?
Stories like these warm the heart. It would be nice is Sharpton or Jackson chimed in on this.
Maybe because white people don't have an Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson to get out in front of these stories.
