The problem is, if not BP, then it will be another. And if not in US waters, then elsewhere. Obama's administration can regulate the heck out of them and it won't help. They can put a permanent moratoreum on offshore drilling, and it won't solve the problem. Another country with more lax regulations will allow it, and it will happen all over again. Sara is right, this is global but it sure doesn't seem to be being approached that way. Mind you, I guess when the majority of your time and energy is spent covering your butt's, that doesn't leave a lot of room for anything else.
Yes it should however I look for it to become a political football instead. I heard about that other rig that could explode on the news a little while ago! I also heard BP hired as their PR person, a woman named Ann Kolten who previously worked for **** Cheney? Oh Good! They are more worried about their perverbial butts than stopping the leak it would seem! Plug the darn hole! I hope after all this is said and done, we never hear from BP again.
This is global disaster. The brains of the world need to be concentrated on stopping this. I don't whether to more angry at BP or the current administration for not jumping on this sooner. The world needs to stop condemning Israel and ignoring N Korea's crime of blowing a ship out of the water and work on this. This crisis should bring the world together in finding a solution.
Actually...no plan. It appears they took a "wait and see" attitude, or "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it" well it's here! It should have been a safety factor when estimating the devestation of their actions or lack thereof.
There has been much talk about that....where was the plan if something happened. The best anyone has really been able to answer is that they assumed (to me that means hoped) that nothing could go wrong...good plan isn't it. Apparantly there is a valve or something that could have been added...a secondary device to stop the oil flow if something like this ever happened. I guess BP (and many of the oil companies) felt it wasn't worth the money. And it was not a safety requirement, so they didn't have to have it there.
It scares me to think of the horrific ramifications of this spill in the years ahead. We will all be touched by it somehow, and already it has put the fishermen out of work, less jobs is one thing we don't need. But I worry about the marine life and the oceans as we know them, will they ever recover, or remain forever an oil slick? To watch the oil spewing into the water is such a helpless feeling, and to think their answer lies with a movie producer! Where are the Engineers that designed this, and where are the plans for stopping the oil leaking in their design. My husband is an Engineer, and he says you always design things with failure in mind and a solution in place, just in case. Greed probably made them skip this valuable part of their design.
With an enviromental disaster of this magnitude, I don't believe there is any fixing it. The damage has been done. All they can really do is try to prevent further damage, and of course clean up the coastlines. Not much can be done about the rest. Sadly, the disbursments really only act to hide it, not solve it. No, the damage is done. Mankind is certainly doing a great job of slowly destroying ourselves aren't we. We continue to destroy our water and we certainly won't survive very long. This situation is hurting way more then just the US. That is just the beginning. I know, thats a very negative attitude, but honestly, it's so incredibly depressing to watch this happen. And just now on Wolf Blizter they are talking about another BP rig "The Atlantis" that is also in danger of exploding. I haven't heard all the details yet, but I think I might just turn it off. At least there is a temporary moretoreum on offshore drilling. All that does though is prevent the oil companies from setting up new rigs, it doesn't do anything to stop the ones already drilling.
It makes one wonder just how bad it will get before its over and how long it will take to get over it? 10-20-50 years? I heard they got the saw running again. Someone said the wells will take us into at least toward end of August and could go all the way thru December. Or it could fail altogether. I think this one is a deal breaker, if something isn't done soon, I look for the people to rise up! We are admittedly angry and getting more so each day this continues. The sad part is that BP will just file bankruptcy and re emerge under a different name. They are the only ones can fix this too is what is soooo frustrating!
It really makes you sick to see such a thing careening out of control like this. It is one of those things that I just wish I could shut my eyes and have it be fixed. But I know this is going to be a whole lot worse before it is better. I think this is one thing the whole nation can agree on--------- what a terrible tragedy this is.
It won't be long until it hits us as well in our far easter provinces. No doubt our killer whale population will suffer tremendously because of this. Such beautiful creatures. Mammo, I could not agree with you more...if they must do it they must find a way to do it safely. Shallower waters would not have proved to be so disasterous. Still awful, but not nearly as bad. I guess I still question the need for offshore drilling in it's entirety. For 5% of the oil required, it just doesn't seem worth it to me. That's just my opinion though.
Once this gets in the loop current it will spread up the Eastern side and impact all those states as well. I was surprised to hear it was getting this close to florida. And from what I understand, there are oil plumes, one a 3 mile long one and the other 10 mile. Probably more that we are not being informed of. I am like all of you, just sick about it all...
I have sailed the waters here in California and Florida off the Keys , I have had the dolphins ride along side my boat ..whales ..this is so heart breaking ..I am one tough cookie but I am beyond comprehension how this was allowed to happen ,I also had shares in BP..............
This is going to affect us in ways we've yet to see! It's heart wrenching to see our waters like this and the poor fish and birds..... This is a good argument to stop making them drill so far out that when something happens it can't be quickly repaired. I know it should never have happened to begin with, but they can drill and be successful in more shallow waters.
I saw it's also coming close to affecting Texas? Did I see that correctly. And of course if it hits those Atlantic currents which it is bound to do, next the Arctic. And Margy, there are definately large oil plumes near the site of the original spill. I think you are probably correct in that there is one close to the coast.
You know, I am almost at the point I can't handle watching the news anymore or reading the oil spill posts. I just feel absolutely sick inside. Everytime I turn it on or read something else, it has gotten worse. And still that oil continues to flow.....
Those that make their livelyhood off of these waters, the wildlife and so on and so on...this is going to impact generations to come. I don't think our waters will ever be the same.
Pray for the fishermen along the coast; this is going to be devastating.
awww crumbs .. I have also heard but not confirmed that a huge oil plume is lying under the water off louisiana ,I believe this is a big danger to the ecology..
