Ann Coulter to Appear at UC Berkeley

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Months-After-Fiery-Protest-Ann-Coulter-To-Appear-At-UC-Berkeley--417410193.html

"Conservative commentator Ann Coulter is set to appear at UC Berkeley on April 27, just months after a talk by disgraced Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos was cancelled amid fiery, violent protests.
Berkeley College Republicans, the campus group behind both speaking engagements, confirmed the visit to NBC Bay Area on Tuesday.

“The Berkeley College Republicans have invited Ms. Coulter to speak at UC Berkeley because she has been one of the most vocal critics of illegal immigration in all its manifestations and was one of the earliest supporters of President Trump, from when he initially announced his candidacy down to the present day,” said Naweed Tahmas, a spokesperson for the campus group.
Berkeley College Republicans is working with Young America’s Foundation, a conservative organization that regularly sponsors university appearances, to iron out the details, including a contract and scheduled appearance time. The group also plans to work with campus police to arrange security measures, Tahmas said.

University officials did not immediately return a request for comment.
Young America’s Foundation tweeted out its own unique confirmation of the Coulter event earlier on Tuesday, warning “snowflakes” — a term used by the so-called alt-right, a populist fringe group made up of white nationalists, to describe liberals — of the impending lecture.

Coulter’s visit will likely be seen as a test for UC Berkeley, historically known as the home of the free speech movement, which came under intense scrutiny in February after anti-Yiannopolous protesters smashed windows, started fistfights and set a lamppost ablaze with little interference from law enforcement.

The downtown riot made national news and prompted a response from President Donald Trump, who floated the idea of cutting federal funds from the university.
Coulter, who rose to fame in the 1990s as a political pundit on "Real Time With Bill Maher," is known for roiling those on the left with her inflammatory comments, particularly those about immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community and feminists.

Her most recent book, "In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!" is a New York Times-bestseller that effectively serves as an ode to Trump and a screed against the mainstream political establishment and minority groups.
“In the same way any immigrant to Finland makes it less white, any immigrant to America makes it less honest,” she opines in the book. In the past, she has also advocated for bringing back literacy tests for voting, called public schools "babysitting" programs for "hoodlums, and said that scaling back women’s rights is a "personal fantasy."
UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said that the Berkeley College Republicans retain the right to invite to campus whomever they deem fit.
However, he said, the university's "administration wishes to make clear that an invitation of this sort in no way suggests our endorsement of a particular point of view, and we will continue to affirm our commitment to the values of diversity, equality, and tolerance that underlie the greatness of Berkeley and, indeed, of our nation."

These people crack me up.  Ann Coulter is about as welcome there as an outbreak of small pox in a maternity ward.  Liberals don't want to hear a thing from a conservative or anyone else for that matter.  Their minds are made up and they would rather sit and call people names rather than have a worthwhile discussion about anything.  Good luck with that, Ann..... sheesh.

I agree with Robert Reich. My remarks about whether she would fight just as hard to make her scheduled commitments in Modesto concerned her motivation for wanting to speak in Berkeley to begin with.

"On Wednesday, officials at the University of California, Berkeley, where I’m a professor, canceled a planned speech by Ann Coulter, citing safety concerns.

In a letter to a campus Republican group that invited Coulter to speak, university officials said that they made the decision to cancel Coulter’s appearance after assessing the violence that flared on campus in February, when the same college Republican group invited right-wing provocateur and Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos to speak.

This is a grave mistake. Coulter should be allowed to speak.

How can students understand the vapidity of Coulter’s arguments without being allowed to hear her make them, and question her about them?

It’s one thing to cancel an address at the last moment because university and local police are not prepared to contain violence – as occurred, sadly, with Yiannopoulos. It’s another thing entirely to cancel an address before it is given, when police have adequate time to prepare for such eventualities.

Free speech is what universities are all about. If universities don’t do everything possible to foster and protect it, they aren’t universities. They’re playpens."

I don't pay Coulter or any political pundit much attention these days.  AS for the "hate speech" comment.... its just talk and if you don't like it, that is totally up to you.  I'm not so sure I ever agreed with the lady, but I don't think I've ever heard her pick someone out and be outright hateful, unless its been a democrat.  That being the case, democrats do it too and when they do it, they often feel it is reasonable.  These people don't matter.  The more attention you pay them, the more they talk.

desrt mentioned that she should go find some Klansmen to talk too.  I don't know enough about the lady.  maybe she would be at home there.  I don't really think so, but whatever.  She's nothing to me.  I can do whatever I want with what she says.  I can waste time believing it is provocative and inflammatory or just another talking head trying to stay relevant....  Either way, she gets only the attention I give her and I feel as if I've given her enough.

OH, they have offered to reschedule her but its apparently at a time when no students would be on campus.  I'd guess if she really had anything worth seeing or hearing, rather, they'd come in droves.  But, the school has been labeled as a "liberal" institution....  Why would this conservative mouth piece even want to talk there?  Whose mind does she think she is going to change?

IMO, this is just another one of those things that we are supposed to pay attention to while we are getting fleeced on the other end.

"Why would this conservative mouth piece even want to talk there?"

She was asked to do so by student republicans, it's just liberal students trying to do away with free speech and they call conservatives fascists.
Regardless of who invited her, my point is more to the fact that her presence is going to go over like a fart in church.  She can go there and talk.  Nobody is stifling free speech. Nobody there except maybe a handful of people want to even look at her, let alone listen to what she has to say.  Go where your message is welcome, invite the media and share....
I think you've got it spot on, Brice. Most people don't want her there and the few that do are simply being provocative. My best advice to thos who don't like her is to ignore her completely.
ACLU defends Coulter after Berkeley speech cancellation

The American Civil Liberties Union is condemning the threats that forced Ann Coulter to cancel her speech at the University of California, Berkeley.

“The unacceptable threats of violence that have led to the ‘hecklers’ veto’ of Ann Coulter’s speech at Berkeley are inconsistent with free speech principles that protect us all from government overreach,” David Cole, the ACLU’s national legal director, said in a statement Wednesday after Coulter canceled her appearance, which had been scheduled for Thursday.

“Hateful speech has consequences, particularly for people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, and others who have been historically marginalized,” Cole continued. “But if the government gets to decide which speech counts as hate speech, the powers that be may later feel free to censor any speech they don’t like.”

The Ann Coulter appearance has been cancelled though they have spoken of rescheduling her.  Personally, I think if you don't like what she has to say, the best thing to do is ignore her. However, people feel with this presidency that we are under attack and young people often react passionately no matter what their beliefs.

Will she still be making an appearance in Modesto as well? If she wants to spew hate speech, she should go where there might be a few Klansmen and fascists interested in hearing her. If the only place she's interested in speaking is Berkeley, it's simple provocation and the more interesting question becomes, 'What are her handlers back at Breitbart trying to incite, and to what end?'.
