Whether you approve of drilling for oil or not (I heartily approve. We have a global oil based economy. And all marketable alternatives are at least 100 years away) the facts are clear. Deep water drilling is by far the most dangerous to the ecology. Problems with blowouts and other problems are fixed much quicker and easier with the shallow water and land based drilling. The deep water drilling was a bow to pressure from ecology extremist groups. And here we are!
As long as the moratorium on deep water drilling remains in place, our economy will suffer greatly. The rigs are being dismantled as we speak. They will be sent to Brazil, Africa and of all place, China. (Don't we owe them a little money???) My dh has a very good friend who is a petroleum engineer. He spends most of his time in China now. But he's based in Brazil. (They were roommates and both got degrees from UTexas in engineering) Looks like we're going to be adding to our debt to China. One blowout in the Gulf in 50 years and now a complete shutdown. The total crash of Gulf Coast economy. .Ask yourself why.
I expect we will see attempts made to smooth the ruffled feathers and more posturing. On one hand, there are the thousands of unhappy "us"...American People and then there is that corporate network and behind the scenes power brokers.
I hope this will be more than a hand slap considering the devastation we are witnessing to wild life, environment and people. The scale of this is horrific and they are talking years to recover.
If anything, the cost of cutting corners to save $ will be scrutinized in light of the gamble it is for something like this to happen. Eye opening all the way around, but who will pay attention to bring about change?
Our British friends really do have their back up on this one. Many British pensioners depend on their investment in BP economically. The price of stock has dropped so dramatically there is talk that BP could be bought out. Really bad news for Britain. Don't get me wrong. BP should have upgraded their safety equipment. I truly believe from reports of communications from the burning rig to the company that was contracted to operate the rig, that this entire disaster was avoidable. They had no contingency plans in the event of a disaster like this one.. And have failed miserably to clean up this mess they made. And out govt hasn't exactly been a lot of help either. Bunch of bunglers all around. The EU has sent clean up vessels that aren't allowed in because Obama won't rescind the Jones act temporarily. Bush did it for Katrina and Obama needs to do it now!
But diplomatically, this does need to be handled very delicately. Britain and the US have been allies for decades. They are extremely valuable in our War on Terror or whatever it's called now. I'd hate to see this cause a rift in our relationship.
Someone sent me that link earlier this evening. It is one thing to be creative enough to create the problem, but............
