Bachmann: The American People Are Concerned About "The Rise Of The Soviet Union"

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/bachmann-american-people-are-concerned-about-rise-soviet-union

8/18/2011

Michele Bachmann dropped by "Jay Sekulow Live" today to talk about her win last weekend in the Iowa Straw Poll and her presidential campaign in general.  During the discussion, Bachmann asserted that why the American people are very concerned about the state of the economy, they are concerned about other issues as well like abortion, defending marriage ... and the rise of the Soviet Union:

I would say it's a unified message. It really is about jobs and the economy. That doesn't mean people haven't [sic] forgotten about protecting life and marriage and the sanctity of the family. People are very concerned about that as well. But what people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward. And especially with this very bad debt ceiling bill, what we have done is given a favor to President Obama and the first thing he'll whack is five hundred billion out of the military defense at a time when we're fighting three wars. People recognize that.

The strategy lies more in lines of being able to get anywhere at the drop of a hat, and doing so with more efficiency and less risk.  Really, it is a matter of logistics.  If the US Military had to operate completely out of the US, it would completely take away from its efficiency.  The reasons we have air craft carriers and destroyers cruising the worlds seas is a matter of efficiency.

If a war were to break out and we had to set sail from any of the continental US Navy bases, we'd completely miss the bus.... see what I am trying to get at?

Our military is a bit thin, but we've obligated ourselves to a lot of things that are classified as UN sanctioned.... which basically means we (the US Military) are there.  If we had to engage any of those adversaries from the continental US, we'd play hell trying to keep our troops outfitted to do the best job they could.

If for some reason we ended up in a war with say, some part of Europe. Strategically, our base/bases in Germany serve as safe haven to transport troops and gear out of and back to.  Kind of like a safe haven...

Do you think that there is strategy then in having a presence in those sorts of countires? (genuinely interested in your opinion here, not being sarcastic).  I guess I just don't understand what the rational would be.  I mean, your military is spread pretty thin right now, correct?  Good Lord, it's like that game Risk isnt' it.  Let down your guard in a certain area, and it gets taken over.  I did think though that it was a valid point, no?  I guess I don't understand the strategy in keeping troops and a presence there.  I mean, the reason was initially because it was the aftermath of war, so of course that makes sense. But why now?

Military strategy is the reasoning behind having, holding and maintaining bases in places like Germany, Japan, etc.  Obviously the cost of doing this at a time like this seems questionable until you try to weigh the idea of global war... strategy vs. cost I guess.

But the attacking goes both ways.  I mean, just your comment about Obama being a tyrant...not everyone sees him that way. And as for your country being weakened by him?  That depends on opinion too.  It's such a heated time isn't it.  Personally, I see a group of people in this forum who care deeply about the state of your country and it's future.  Every single one of you, no question there.  But how and who to sort it all out?  That's opinion.  It's good to discuss the new potential candidates...it's a huge decision who should run, especially right now.  I'm sorry you see that as attacking, I really don't think that is the intent.  Just passionate beliefs on how to fix what is wrong.

I think our country looks very weak. The whole 911 thing, the mosque being built there, the debt, everthing to me says we look weak.
We need God first and foremost.
We need our military to be stronger. We need to listen to those who were warning of this
           years ago.
We need to toss out all the money waste and redo welfare
We need to close up shops over seas and make things in the USA.
We need to close our doors to poeple wanting to come here just until we have jobs for all our people.
etc...

I’m not scared. I built each member of family a replica of the desks we had when we were in school. If Russia attacks we will just get under our desks.

Beau, I hear what you are saying.  However, if you talk to people from Russia, the entire area is just a mess right now.  Not saying that they could not become a super power in the future, but for today?  There is so much infighting between the countries of the former USSR.  There is also intense corruption, poverty, it's just a mess over there.  Plus, communism has essentially fallen there.  The only real threat I see from Russia right now is that they do continue to provide weapons to unfriendly countries...Syria and Iran are good examples of that.  And of course, any nuclear armed country has the potential to be a threat.

I also would never consider India to be a threat.  They are far to busy fighting with Pakistan...now that is scary...two nuclear armed countries that hate each other.  But India is considered friendly.  I am more concerned about Pakistan.  The gov't is supposedly a US allie, but amongst the people...there is intense hatred of the west and of course it is a breeding ground for terrorism.

I think it wrong to consider every country making technological advancements a threat.  I mean, did anyone ever really think that the US should be the only country to do so?  Knowledge is not a threat...crazy gov't's are a threat.

China is a concern for sure.  I do believe they will emerge as the next superpower.  However, a big part of that is their dependancy on the US for their exports.  So although they have the potential to be a threat, I cannot see them cutting off one of their biggest revenue sources.

I still think the biggest threat is possibly Pakistan if the current gov't should fall, and of course several of the Middle Eastern countries.

My comments are made in general to all and to no one in particular. But this sort of thing makes my blood boil. FEAR! Dont we have enuff problems. Read the bible according to it, we dont exist as a entitity at all in the last days, what does that tell ya? Putting Bachmann up for pres could be the ticket to extinction? May be.

Been there done that. When all else fails use fear... Ridiculous imo.  I mean you know what they got right? Now do you know what we got or that we are inferior to them in some way?

Has anyone read Revelations, the last book of the Bible? If you want the fear factor, try that one. And its been around for thousands of years and predicted nuclear warfare before we ever heard of it. Now everyone run to church right now and get saved!

Besides, the world is going to end in December remember?

Yeah, I think it is downright sad to even go there.

The former Soviet Union (USSR) is now the Russian Federation. They are continuing their advancements in science & technology. Russia is completing the GLONASS (global satellite navigation system), a 5th generation jet fighter, and a mobile nuclear plant. The Russian Federation has and will continue to be an antagonist to the United States.

Nope, your not missing anything.  The Soviet Union does not exist.  Hasn't for 10 years.  Her statement confuses me as well.  I do see the rise of China and even India as being somewhat threatening, but cannot sort out the Soviet Union.  Things are a mess in the former Soviet Union...they are all fighting each other over there.

I do think she's right about the decline though.  And yes, I agree it's stoppable.  Still haven't heard any real ideas as to how to make that happen though.

Her comments on miltary cutting are interesting.  I haven't heard anyone suggest it should be cut in terms of the wars.  Where I have heard cuts suggested are the existing military presence in countries that pose no threat at all such as Poland, Germany, Japan.  The war in Europe has been over a very long time, and apparantly the military budget in those countries continues to be massive.  Why is the US still there?  The current threat lies in the Middle East and perhaps even West Africa...but Europe? and Japan?  All countries that have strong ties to the US in a positive way.  It was Barney Franks I heard talk about this issue and frankly, it did make sense to me.  Seems a lot of money could be saved by pulling out of those areas.

Yes she speaks the truth , this is indeed what is happening , many more are speaking out now its not simply the Tea parties and Bachman  We are in a decline but I don't feel its unstoppable if we start to stand up and do something about it ...I have some tea party meetings coming up and its exactly what they are concerned about..and what to do about it..
