But others say blaming violent video games is simply an excuse, and that if military-style rifles were banned, there would be fewer mass shootings.
I do agree!....
I think it is a really good sign that all of those groups met with him. I do HOPE that the NRA takes a step back and OWN some responsibility. We ALL know stricter laws won't stop ALL gun violence but it WILL STOP more Mass shooting. It will also make those that are gun owners who are maybe not so responsible, MORE responsible. I don't understand the NRA's position. It's just being opposing for no good reason. SMH...Again, I hold the Administration accountable for not doing anything during the first term, but they are doing something and everyone just needs to get on board. We're talking guns laws that WILL save lives. NO ONE's gun is going to get taken away, these laws are to just prohibit unnecessary death. (not saying that any death is necessary.)..
Biden also plans to meet with representatives of the entertainment industry, which NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called a "callous" and "corrupt" industry in a December speech.

Why does it have to be one or the other, it is both *and* more they need to stop being so knee jerk defensive and let the administration take a holistic approach to the problem, geez.

Vice President Joe Biden told reporters before his Thursday meeting with the National Rifle Association that he expects to submit new gun control recommendations to President Barack Obama by next Tuesday, possibly including universal background checks, a national firearms registration database, and magazine round restrictions.
Biden said the recommendations will be based on suggestions from key interest groups that met with him over the last several weeks, including pro-gun groups, gun control advocates, and video game creators.
"There has got to be some common ground, to not solve every problem, but diminish the probability" of future shootings, Biden told reporters Thursday. "That's what this is all about. There are no conclusions I have reached."

Biden mentioned, however, that he is considering recommendations to implement "universal background checks," eliminate the sale of high-capacity magazines, and start gathering data on gun violence to track national trends.
"There is a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks, not just close the gun show loophole but totally universal background checks including private sales," Biden added.
Biden, who owns shotguns for skeet shooting, says that "there is nothing that has pricked the consciousness of the American people" like learning about "little six-year-olds riddled ... with bullet holes in their class."

The NRA released a statement following the meeting, indicating Biden had already made up his mind on many of the policies before they walked into the meeting.
"We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment," the NRA said in a statement. "While claiming that no policy proposals would be 'prejudged,' this task force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners—honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans."
"We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen," the NRA said.
Biden's recommendations will come as several gun control bills make their way through Congress and as a handful of states either debate restrictions on gun ownership or lock-in laws that protect gun rights.

The video games are violent...I mean they all look so real nowadays...
It wouldn't really bother me either. There are some games that young kids (I'm going to say boys but maybe girls too) glorify that are really awful.
My son came home from a play date and told me he wanted "halo" something or other for Christmas. Good Grief. They are not speaking of angels' halos! It's as violent as they come. Luckily I went on line and read about it and then saw a bit of it at a video store. We'll stick for our Rated E/everyone video games.
Those violent games have got to go. I feel like an old lady in the times of the prohibition, waving a cane at these gamesters, lol. But I haven't even seen the new ones. When I was teaching my students loved a game called "Grand theft auto" Horrible shootings and gore and police killings..I really don't think this trash should be protected by "Freedom of Speech" I don't think our forefathers knew what we would be up against.
They are looking at any and all things that this commission came up with and the possibility of violent video games is on the list from what I understand. And that wouldn't bother me at all either, some of those things are really gross. They are looking at a balanced approach and not just guns. Which I think is good.
I know!! I thought of that and wondered if he was trying to be funny.
I heard this week that the tide has turned with the general public regarding a ban on assault type weapons with the majority being for it. While one never knows 'who' they are polling (as no one ever seems to ask me . . .), I do tend to believe this. I know that I myself have definately formed a strong opinion that is for a ban when I didn't feel this way before.
Interesting that a meeting with video game executives is quoted. Are they working on banning violent video games as well?
"I say its time to quit giving in to the threats and such, and its time to address the problem and that may start with guns and restrictions but certainly does not end there, and there is no way do I think the answer to guns is more guns, especially in our schools. There has to be a better way. imo of course."
I so agree T!
"I'm shooting for Tuesday." Unfortunate choice of words.
Just think about this a moment now. What would the NRA benefit by cooperating with anything? They are along with gun manufaturers making boo coo money off of this controversy. They have everything to gain by fighting any restrictions at all! They have said they have enuff support in CONGRESS to fight any restrictions, which is telling us that they ( nothing more than a lobby group), own enuff of our politicians in congress to fight this. lol
You have the freak show starting with idiots calling for revolution, shedding blood, and killing people if it goes any further! These nuts are the same ones making money for the NRA and Gun Manufacturers.
LOL, from what I understand there are some things being considered like background checks for all gun purchases, longer wait times, restrictions on magazines, and possible assault weapons ban, but nothing has been decided upon, and there are other options as well being bandied about.

You said it..I'm optimistic and confident that we will have sensible, common sense, gun laws on the books, but this meeting sounded far from "productive"..lol
He was probably smoking the same stuff that Rush has been smoking......joking of course.
"Productive" for me would be on the same page and progressing to a win-win for both sides OR progressing to a situation that both sides can live with.
That's what I was saying to myself...Joe thinks it was productive but the NRA says "the Obama administration has an agenda to attack the Second Amendment."...Talk about not being on the same page..I love you Joe but What were you smokin before the meeting?...lol
Geez, really would like some details on *how* it was productive.
