So the reason I even posted this is because I had an heated debate with a dear friend of mine and it's still bothering me...

We were talking about a whole bunch of things and we ended up on said topic.

I said I believe people are born gay. I find it hard to believe that for 30yrs of ones life they were straight and then all of a sudden they "decide" to be gay. This article I found was the most "neutral" article on the subject. (If anyone can find a better one, PLEASE be my guest)...She believes people choose to be gay. She starts going on about how it says in the bible that no man shall lay with another man and no women shall lay with another woman. I said to her it also says thou shalt not kill but people kill....Long story short I felt a little offended during the conversation because she was basically telling me I'm wrong and I don't know what I'm talking about and because I don't study the bible as much as she does, that's why I think they way I do. (she's a Jehovah's witness so she's REALLY into the bible and the word of god)..I ended up cutting the conversation short because I didn't want it to t urn into an argument and I love her dearly so I just said to her, you believe people chose to be gay and I believe people are born gay, let's just leave it at that.To me she just wasn't making any sense. her only justification to her opinion was the bible...What do you guys think?

I completely agree with you and the article.  "Witnesses" are nuts.  I have some good friends that are "witnesses" and supposedly they don't believe in science.... until they need a doctor.

So, I do believe that people are born gay.  My son was born gay and it became somewhat obvious very early on.  It wasn't like he wanted to wear dressed and play with Barbies, just acted different... not like most boys.  I also think it is possible for some people to act out homosexually on occasion but try to live a traditionally heterosexual life style.

I was so dumbfounded by what she was saying..I mean she was carrying on about how God doesn't create gay people and its a sin and that's only the devil behind it..I was like ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW??? I saw her in a whole new light today..

"I also think it is possible for some people to act out homosexually on occasion but try to live a traditionally heterosexual life style."

I agree as well....

I know that some people are born Gay but I don’t believe they all are. I know to many people that thought they were Gay but it was just a phase they went through.

IDK...I do know one can be bi-sexual and one can be either gay or lesbian...IMO the people that are bi-sexual, gay or Lesbian didn't choose to be. It's just who they are. I don't think they have any control on who they are attracted to. I also think it was ignorant for my friend to even go there. I was really surprised that someone I knew thinks like that...

Most of the Bi-Sexuals I know, both men and women are in it mainly for the sex. My first wife (in the 70s) was one of them. I had no complaints, hehehe.

This should not come as a surprise at all as God's Word has been clear about this for thousands of years both in the Old Testament and the New Testament, God said this is a sin. Your friend is correct in that all sin and temptation comes from the devil. But God says there is hope, a way out, for all who place their hope in Jesus Christ. For those who refuse to do this, the bible will always be an offense to them and they will not understand or accept it.
I do not believe people are born this way but is a choice, as many gay people will also tell you. I studied into this for awhile and have read of many who came out of this lifestyle after accepting Jesus Christ and have written books on this. And they all said it was a choice but that they found freedom in Jesus Christ. Jesus does promise freedom over any sin area of our lives if we will but put our faith in Him. It may be a struggle as sin can be sometimes but He promises to help us.
I don't believe this is a worse sin than any other. We all have sin areas in our lives we struggle with, whether it be lying, addictions, what have you, but Jesus promises hope for those who truly want to be free.

I know this is not the PC way of thinking anymore or the popular way of thinking but God's Word has never changed on this and He did warn that homosexuality would increase (and the acceptance of it) in the end times before Jesus comes back and that "natural love would grow cold". This natural love is the love between a man and woman or a parent and child. He gave us warning after warning of the things to watch for so that there will be no excuse when He does return. I do believe we are in those end times, however long it takes, because of all the signs and prophecies being fulfilled right now. He warned that bible believing Christians would be persecuted, mocked and rejected for their faith, too. We are seeing that now and it will get worse. (Study the book of Revelations and Daniel, for signs of the end times. It's also in other books of the bible.)
Don't take my word on any of this, though. If you truly want the truth and want to understand the bible and what God says, then do your own study of the bible and ask God to help you understand. He promises He will for those who truly seek Him. And for those who protest that men wrote the bible and that things could have been lost in translation, find an original Hebrew/Greek bible, then and do a study, with a concordence. God said His Word was inspired by Him through His prophets for the teaching, correcting and protection of all who turn to Him and follow Him.
There are many bible scriptures I can show you for those who truly want to understand or you can do your own research. Don't just take my word for anything. Study and pray and ask God to direct you to the truth. He promises to be found for those who truly seek Him with all their hearts and He promises to show us the truth for those who truly want to know the truth, even if it's not what we think we want, we have to be open to and accepting of that. But He never changes and His Word never changes, it's us who change and turn away but He is still always there for those who turn back and seek Him.
Regardless of whatever sin we or others are struggling with, we are told to pray for and love each other. And yes, you can truly hate the sin and love the person. God hates sin because He knows what it does to us. It seperates us from Him, but we can always turn back in repentance and He accepts us back.
Again, I understand this is not the popular way of thinking anymore but God's Word is truth and never changes, and He says our own wisdom (outside of Him) is foolishness in His eyes. We will never understand unless we truly turn to Him and seek Him with all that we have. Then He promises to open our eyes to the truth, the more we seek Him.
My prayer is that many of you will truly want to know the truth for yourselves and will read God's Word and seek Him for yourselves. We are not promised tomorrow.
I am not here to start any arguments, I promise. I only bring these things up because there seemed to be some question on what the bible really says on this matter and all I can say is before making up your minds, do your own study of what God truly said in His Word about this area or any other area.
Peace and blessings,
April

Yes, I know, and I know most of the conservatives have left this group. I only brought this up because it was already brought up when the OP said she talked to a friend and what her friend said that the bible said and the OP seemed to question that this was indeed biblical. That's why I brought it up. The bible is also an historical book, by the way. :-)

I like the Bible and I do respect it, but I see it as a living text open to interpretation.
Funny, this is one subject the conservatives and liberals in this group do seem to agree on;respecting religion but basically leaving it out of political current events discussions.

Doesn't the bible also say that someone parted the seas and another guy walked on water or something?  Completely believable....  I need more coffee.

Yes, brice, Jesus walked on water, Jesus, the son of God.

Politics and religion both can get heated, I agree, as there are different opinions among many people, but I also agree that it certainly can remain respectful and still discussed.

It was Moses who parted the Red Sea, Moses, the Son of Amram.

Yes, Moses parted the Red Sea through God's power and Jesus walked on the water and also called Peter out on the water towards Him and said anyone could do the same if they have the faith and trust in Him. :-) Amazing, isn't it? The bible isn't just a religious book, either, it's an historical book and the more archeoloigists find things the more they find proof of these things that happened and the people who did exist that the bible talks about.
I especially find the prophecies in the bible fascinating as many of them have come true and there don't seem to be many left to happen. Fascinating stuff but then again, that's another subject. ;)

So there has to be at least a million people with faith and trust in Jesus Christ.  Why haven't they walked on water?  I guess they just don't want too?

Sadly, I think many don't have the kind of faith that they had back then. They believe but still have doubts. We have to believe with NO doubt. We also have to remember that God isn't some genie we can snap our fingers and demand what we want. If it's for His glory and our good, then we are more likely to see it. He's not interested in just providing a circus show for us, especially those who demand miracles.

BUT...miracles DO happen still today and every day if you look around. My mother is a walking miracle and a testament to what God can do for those who truly believe. He doesn't always heal us the way we want because He's more interested in our souls than our bodies because our soul lasts forever and our bodies only for a short time.
By the way, there's no medical reason for my mother to be walking. It's in her medical records, and she's not the only one. There are many more out there like her.
Again, off topic and my apologies, just trying to answer to what brice just posted.

"...I make it clear to my students that I am not an expert in Roman, Jewish, or Christian history. I tell them that my job is to expose them to scholarly research, evidence, and arguments made by experts.  One expert is Joseph Telushkin. His explanation about the falsehood of the Biblical account of Pontius Pilate is widely accepted among scholars and historians. It is as follows (I read this out loud to my students and project it on my screen for them to see and read):

Concerning Jesus’ executioner, Pontius Pilate, we have a considerable body of data that contradicts the largely sympathetic portrayal of him in the New Testament. Even among the long line of cruel procurators who ruled Judea, Pilate stood out as a notoriously vicious man. He eventually was replaced after murdering a group of Samaritans. The Romans realized that keeping him in power would only provoke continual rebellions. The gentle, kindhearted Pilate of the New Testament – who in his “heart of hearts” really did not want to harm Jesus – is fictional. Like most fictions, the story was created with a purpose.

When the New Testament was written, Christianity was banned by Roman law. The Romans, well aware that they had executed Christianity’s founder – indeed the reference to Jesus’ crucifixion by the Roman historian Tacitus is among the earliest allusions to him outside the New Testament – had no reason to rescind their anti-Christian legislation. Christianity’s only hope for gaining legitimacy was to “prove” to Rome that its crucifixion of Jesus had been a terrible error, and had only come about because the Jews forced Pilate to do it. Thus, the New Testament depicts Pilate as wishing to spare Jesus from punishment, only to be stymied by a large Jewish mob yelling, “Crucify him.” The account ignores one simple fact. Pilate’s power in Judea was absolute. Had he wanted to absolve Jesus, he would have done so. He certainly would not have allowed a mob of Jews, whom he detested, to force him into killing someone whom he admired...."

We probably should take this discussion elsewhere, but I'd love to continue.  As for being interested in our souls, is that why he makes some of us die horrible deaths and why he kills babies?

I think we may as well stay on this thread for discussion. Maybe consider it an exception. April is a person of strong faith but so far has not really offended me, she is just stating her beliefs. Mike and Brice are clearly interested and not really being disrespectful so I for one am interested in where this thread will take us and am hoping that it will be the last of these sorts of discussions.
I have been bored lately and though I am not a Christian and have no intention of joining the fold, I respect and like Christians and all ppl of faith who behave in an reasonable and kindly manner.
So my vote is to go for it and please, lets stay peaceful.

I see no problem with the thread or with anything that has been said.
We should be free to talk about religion - in my opinion.

I've been in a few conversations about the bible.  Now don't get me wrong.  I am not anti-Christian.  I just don't believe much of whats said in the bible.  There are too many contradictions and both testaments contradict each other.

I've heard these "contradictions" being excused as editing errors, printing errors, etc.  If that is the case, how many more errors are there that we are believing in?
