Fecal Matter Found on 72 Percent of Grocery Carts

I didn't post this to be Gross. We are approaching the Flu season and never thought about the germs on shopping carts. I'll be buying some Antibacterial Wipes.

The next time you head to the grocery store, you might want to arm yourself with some antibacterial wipes, and maybe some disposable gloves before you grab a shopping cart.

That’s because those carts are actually dirtier than a public bathroom, according to researchers at the University of Arizona, who swabbed the handles of 85 carts in four states looking for bacterial contamination, USA Today reported.

In the end, they found 72 percent of the carts had a positive marker for fecal matter, and 50 percent had E. coli.

Researchers said they found more fecal matter on the shopping cart handles than a typical bathroom due to the fact that bathrooms are disinfected more often than these carts.

The lead researcher, professor Charles Gerba, also recommends that shoppers keep a close-eye on those reusable shopping bags because they can become what he calls a “bacterial swamp.

Some stores actually provide antibacterial wipes for cleaning the cart.  They have them on a hook right by where the carts are.  Not only do the carts become contaminated from people handling the groceries, think how, after we load our groceries into the vehicle, we push the cart into the cart return, where they are vulnerable to birds or other "outdoor contaminants".

Another place to be careful of:  The door handle of that public restroom... I, typically, dry my hands then use a piece of paper towel to open the door, tossing the towel after I've opened the door.

Oh good lord!  Yuck!!  How does it get there?  I worry about toddler slobber and hence use the wipes that are always at the grocery entrance to wash down the handle but it sounds like the whole thing could use sterilization.  I never  thought about a poop factor on the carts.  Ick.

My regular grocery store provides the sterile wipes and I use them religiously.  Both Ryder and I also do a good handwashing after putting the cart away.  Seriously disgusting stuff!

SM, I suspect it's from kids.  Remember when Ryder had Rota Virus when he was a year?  That's usually transmitted through fecal matter as well. Huge yuck!

Fecal isn't the only bacteria we need to worry about on/in those cars; I agree that the entire cart should be disinfected on a regular basis.
