Chris Dorner Breaking News - Shoot Out with Authorities

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/12/chris-dorner-manhunt_n_2672238.html

LOS ANGELES -- A person believed to be the fugitive ex-Los Angeles cop sought in three killings exchanged gunfire with authorities in the San Bernardino Mountains on Tuesday, a law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity.

The officer requested anonymity because the officer was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

It's believed Christopher Dorner committed a residential burglary of a cabin where a couple was tied up, the officer told The Associated Press.

One of the people was able to get away and make a call.

Authorities responded to the location and gave chase when the burglar fled in a stolen car. Gunfire was exchanged.

The area is in the Big Bear region where a search for Dorner has been under way since his pickup truck was found there Thursday.

A KCAL-TV reporter in the Angelus Oaks area along Highway 38 reported gunfire in his vicinity.

The noise of the gunbattle was broadcast by the station, whose reporter suddenly found himself near the fight. Someone could be heard yelling at the reporter to get out of the area.

Road blocks are up around Big Bear.

San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said a stolen vehicle report from a residence was received at 12:20 p.m.

"The reporting party identified the suspect as looking like Christopher Dorner but that has not been confirmed," Miller said.

The former Navy reservist began his run from the law on Feb. 6 after authorities connected the slayings of a former police captain's daughter and her fiance with an angry manifesto they said Dorner posted on Facebook. He vowed to bring "warfare" to Los Angeles police and their family members, which led the department to assign officers to guard more than 50 families connected to his so-called targets.

Within hours of the release of photos of the 6-foot, 270-pounder described as armed and "extremely dangerous," Dorner allegedly unsuccessfully tried to steal a boat in San Diego to flee to Mexico and then ambushed police in Riverside County, shooting three and killing one.

Jumpy officers guarding one of his targets in Torrance on Thursday shot and injured two women delivering newspapers because they mistook their pickup truck for Dorner's.

The hunt for Dorner appeared to go cold after his burned-out pickup was found later that morning in the mountains east of Los Angeles and his footprints disappeared on frozen ground.

Police found charred weapons and camping gear inside the truck, but it wasn't clear if he had fled into the San Bernardino Mountains near the resort town of Big Bear Lake or left the area.

Helicopters using heat-seeking technology searched the forest from above while scores of officers, some using bloodhounds, scoured the ground and checked hundreds of vacation cabins – many vacant this time of year – in the area. A snowstorm hindered the search and may have helped cover his tracks, though authorities were hopeful he would leave fresh footprints if hiding in the wilderness.

Dorner's beef with the department dated back at least five years, when he was fired for filing a false report accusing his training officer of kicking a mentally ill suspect. Dorner, who is black, claimed in his manifesto that he was the subject of racism by the department and fired for doing the right thing.

He said he would get even with those who wronged him in an event to reclaim his good name.

"You're going to see what a whistleblower can do when you take everything from him especially his NAME!!!" he wrote. "You have awoken a sleeping giant."

Chief Charlie Beck, who initially dismissed the allegations in Dorner's rant, said he would reopen the investigation into his firing – not to appease the ex-officer, but to restore confidence in the black community, which long had a fractured relationship with police that has improved in recent years.

One of the targets listed in the manifesto was former LAPD Capt. Randal Quan, who represented Dorner before the disciplinary board. Dorner claimed he put the interests of the department above his.

The first victims were Quan's daughter, Monica Quan, 28, a college basketball coach, and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, 27, who were shot multiple times in their car in a parking garage near their condo.

Dorner served in the Navy, earning a rifle marksman ribbon and pistol expert medal. He was assigned to a naval undersea warfare unit and various aviation training units, according to military records. He took leave from the LAPD for a six-month deployment to Bahrain in 2006 and 2007.

I'm not sold that it is his body. I'll wait for the autopsy..This Idiot could've went about this in a totally different way. I mean corruption is know when it comes to the LAPD..No matter what, it does not give him the right to just kill people cus he was mad about how and why he got fired. I hope that was his body in that cabin cus if it's not, those families on his "manifesto" are in a lot of danger...

I gave up on the State of the Union, too...... got tired of watching Joe take off and put on his glasses and eeewww, he put the bow of his glasses in his mouth, how many times?  And that "toothy smile" and silly nod - not for me......

On the other hand was Boehner who reminds me so much of Eyore on Winnie the Pooh.......  Does he ever really show emotion?  I did notice that he might have "grinned" once, but I wasn't sure.......

The stand up/sit down applause is sickening.........  I'm off to bed; I'll pick up the highlights in the morning......

They are not sure if he is in there or not. They have no choice but to let it burn. They can't send Fire Fighters in until they know it is safe. I'm seeing they are letting Figher Fighters go into the area now. So they must feel if anyone is in it, they are dead.

The old West was known as lawless territory.
Not a fun place unless you had Matt Dillon by your side (I always like Gunsmoke)

So do we think Dorner is in the cabin that they are letting burn, or did he exit the cabin and escape? The cabin has a basement and there is a barn and several other cabins all within a 10 mile radius and they are all rentals. Did he cause the explosion maybe as a diversion? They are not even one hundred percent sure its Dorner.

Here’s food for thought

The 6th Amendment became law on December 12th 1791

“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence”

http://www.revolutionary-war-and-beyond.com/6th-amendment.html

However, it was common in the Old West to have Wanted Dead or Alive posters and I’ve seen Re-Prints of FBI Wanted Dead or Alive posters for John Dillinger in the 1930s

I think we're in total agreement on this one.

I don't care what happens to this scumbag; I just want it to happen in such a way that won't set a precedent that could cause other people to lose the right of due process, or that  might hurt innocent people that may be with him.

That is exactly what I was thinking, there were people with him and they would have been killed in a drone attack and there could still be hostages, so it is risky. At this point with it being a shootout with cops he must know he has forfeited his life. I am not at all sorry for him, he has brought this on himself.
My concerns are more to the legal precedent that would have been set had the Government sent in a drone to take him out. It wouldn't end with him and we will have really woven a tangled web for ourselves by taking that sort of action. I too, resent these guys living off our taxes in relative comfort after causing such death and grief, but it seems the price we must pay in order to live in a lawful country.
The alternative is unthinkable.

We were typing at the same time.  So I guess the news agencies are not honoring the request by LAPD not to report live...... we aren't watching news right now.

"One person interviewed (and several others according to newscasters) have stated they weren't concerned for their safety the last few days since Dorner's targets were law enforcement."

He broke into a private home and tied up a couple, then stole their car; he's not just targeting law enforcement and anyone who thinks they can't become involved, is subject to being hurt.

I don't think it's over, yet, by any means.  Last I read, he's holed up in that cabin and the LAPD has actually asked news outlets not to report live, in case he's watching TV.   Could last quite a while longer.

I do have a problem with the drone taking him out, because, if it's armed, he doesn't stand a chance against it and everyone should get some kind of chance.

If he's really holed up in that cabin (what if it's actually someone else or there's someone innocent with him?), I might change my mind if he fires more shots.

Watching the live feed NBC news.

One person interviewed (and several others according to newscasters) have stated they weren't concerned for their safety the last few days since Dorner's targets were law enforcement. Despite the fact his first victim's were civilians (law enforcement family members).

Whether this is idiocy, complacencey, bravado or they honestly believe his 'manifesto' this speaks volumes about our world.

In a situation like this, rather it was Dorner are not, once their was an Exchange of Gunfire, I would not have a problem with a Drone Taking him Out.

Totally agree that nothing excuses his behavior.

If those things are really happening on the LAPD, there are other ways he could have gotten the information out, if he has solid proof that what he's saying is true.

Nothing excuses this man's behaviour.
However, I heard a good program on the radio yesterday ( Democracy Now) about the issues Dorner is trying to bring to light concerning the LAPD ( everything from racism to LAPD's recently murdering a Latino woman and her daughter)
These things are very well worth being discussed and are being ignored by the mainstream media, although as I said, nothing excuses the man's behaviour.
