Cockroaches could help combat MRSA and e-coli

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7981714/Cockroaches-could-help-combat-MRSA-and-E.coli.html

Scientists at Nottingham University found that the insects, which are widely reviled for their dirty image, could actually be more of a health benefit than a health risk.

They have identified up to nine different molecules in the tissues of cockroaches and locusts that are toxic to bacteria and they hope will pave the way for new treatments for multi-drug resistant bacterial infections.

Simon Lee, a postgraduate researcher who is presenting his work at the Society for General Microbiology’s autumn meeting in Nottingham, said: “We hope that these molecules could eventually be developed into treatments for E. coli and MRSA infections that are increasingly resistant to current drugs.

“Also, these new antibiotics could potentially provide alternatives to currently available drugs that may be effective but have serious and unwanted side effects,” he said.

see I suppose I forget that distinction as well..cockroaches I *can* handle...german roaches are awful because they're so pervasive, but regular cockroaches are just gross and annoying.

palmetto bugs are like creatures from my nightmares. Living in sub-tropical Florida, but in the woodsy part of it...we have palmetto bugs like most people have...i dunno...dust mites, lol. They're huge. they're disgusting, and they have no freaking fear. they'll stare you down.

they are, in fact, one of the few things on this earth that can stop me dead in my tracks and make me whimper and shake in fear...one got in my footie jammies when I was 4 and ever since then I've had a horrid fear of them.

My grandpa almost died of a MRSA infection after he broke his hip and had to have surgery to have pins inserted. It's a nasty nasty bacteria.

OK, Nottingham University...cockroaches, you're welcome to coddle and work with. But if you turn to palmetto bugs...we're gonna have words. and they're going to involve "stop" and "encouraging" and "the" and "palmetto" and "bugs" and "to" as well as "breed".

A palmetto bug is way different from a cockroach; they (palmetto bugs) live mainly in/near/around wooded areas; we have them once in a while -- whenever they inadvertently got into the house, it's like they fly kamikaze flights.

Cockroaches are very different, much smaller and they live every where in the US; they tend to come out at night and scurry like mice when you turn a light on.........ewww.

But let's not forget that, nasty as cockroaches are, they probably won't kill us; the bacteria can.......

At any rate, I don't think they are telling us that we need to live with the critters; only that they can be used to destroy certain bacteria.
