Do you support equal pay for women?

It's been nearly 50 years since Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, but today a woman who works full time still earns just 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man.

That's not just unfair. When women, who make up nearly half the workforce, bring home less money each day, it means they have less for the everyday needs of their families. That's bad for kids, it's bad for communities, and it's bad for the entire country.

So President Obama is supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act, which is designed to update the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and help close the pay gap. Congress is scheduled to vote on the legislation this week.

I feel young too! Then I look in the mirror. And I have become quite good at predicting the local weather as well. You ARE young compared to me. I AM older AND wiser!

ROFL!

Speak for yourself, 'Old Woman'.

I'm but a spring-chicken of 40 years!

"Us old people". I resent being called OLD!!!

Actually, h3ll... I AM getting on up there. I was talking to a friend of mine at the dog-park just the other day, and when the topic of age came up and I asked her old she was, incidentally, and she said she was born in 1991, I almost vomited.

That's a full year AFTER I graduated from high-school.

Okay, I'll concede Teko... I'm old;-(

pitiful. My da just went for an interview at red lobster yesterday. She has a small flower tattoo on her forearm. They refused to even interview her. I tried to tell her about those tattoos, but she knew it all! You know how tht goes. Keep in mind that she worked for TGI Fridays for years with that same tattoo. Restaurant said they recently changed their policy to NO tattoos. I wonder who is gonna work for em now? Us old people?

He looked into it.... 3 different lawyers said it wasn't worth persuing.  Because of all kinds of wonderful legislation, there are "quotas" to be met and he didn't fall within the "needs" of the community as the law specifies.

A buddy of mine tried to get on with a big city fire department about 15 years ago.  In the physical agility/ability, he scored in the top 5%.  In the written exam, he scored in the top 1%.  In the oral review boards, he scored the 2vd highest at that particular round of hiring.  He was Not given the job.

He asked for an appeal and was told, "You are white, married with children, 30 years old.... regardless of your scores or ability, you do not fit the profile of the people we need to hire."

What does this say?

Well the legislation is equal pay for equal work. Pretty self explanatory imo. Key word being equal. I feel like women have been set back 100 years in just 100 days.

I'm a little perplexed by this.

I just read the bill (thank you Teko) and the results of the vote (again, thank you Teko), and I don't understand why the Republicans would have voted it down with such authority.

There HAS TO BE more to this...

I've been mulling this over for a day or so now, and I've decided what I think:

YES

In almost every circumstance, a woman should get paid as much as a man.

If the job is to lift 50lbs, and the woman can only life 25lbs, then NO.
If the job is to breast-feed a baby, and the man can't accommodate, then YES (she should actually get paid MORE, wouldn't you think?).

I think you see what I'm saying (hopefully).

There are some jobs for men, and there are some jobs for women. All the jobs that can be done, equally by either sex, should have equal pay.

The Republicans that voted this down, unless I'm missing something that was slipped into the bill that made them vote negative, got this one wrong.

I'm Building a School in New Orleans. There is a woman over the Block Masons. She actualy starts crying everytime there is a major problem. I think she should get paid more just for the show.

To me equal is equal period.  If two people are doing the same job and possess the same skill set, the same wage should be paid.  Nothing else should be a consideration.  You do have to be fully qualified though...testing (if required should be the same) and if there are physical requirements you should have to meet them with no concessions.

It is very true (at least where I live) that women are still often paid less then men for the same job.  It's improving though, and it's now illegal to do this.  You also cannot fire someone here without showing cause (and not just because you don't like their shoes..lol).  This has helped curtail a lot of discrimination.

I agree....

I've been in a situation where I've been told not to discuss my wage.  Turns out, 19 years of effort and success didn't mean a whole lot to my bosses.  A job that I was offered right after I quit the job of 19 years offered to pay me 25% more....  Pitiful.... Greed is everywhere and a lot of very valuable employees are very, very under appreciated.

Well surprise surprise! The republicans blocked passage of this too!

Because Obama presented it, they blocked it as usual.

Now please sing their praises to me some more! I do not have the actual print of who voted how, but I will definately be finding it asap.

I get what your saying brice and to a point agree wholeheartedly. But the problem is in business positions and all positions from walmart all the way to top levels of business, do women have these issues. Take a man and a woman in just about any position and you will find that 90 percent of the time the man is being paid more. Ever work somewhere where you are told NOT to discuss your pay? Thats a sure giveaway and tells you up front that there may be an issue.

I have been in this situation. Not just with the man making more money but with the situation where people hired after us were paid more on the hour than the employees with senority.

Its an old myth now that men are the breadwinners. It is this old myth that gets men more money on the hour. Times have changed and so the attitudes need to as well.

This legislation provides an outlet to fight discrimination of equal pay when and if it is found.

In almost every circumstance....  I don't want to come off like a male chauvinist pig, so hear me out before the crucifying please.

When a woman could not meet the physical demands of the job and could not perform to the same standards as a man could, that would be the only reason.

A 120 pound fireman (woman) can not move an 220 pound unconscious individual like a 185 lb man could.... physically they arent the same.  That would be it.  Everyone else knows that women are typically smarter and far more rational than men are.

It will be very interesting to see who votes how. Romney says he supports pay equity but will not say if he supports the legislation or doesnt. Same with the Lily Ledbetter act. Refuses to give support, just says if elected he will not repeal it. But doesnt say what he feels about the bill itself.

The Paycheck Fairness Act strengthens the remedy, enforcement, and exception provisions of the existing Equal Pay Act. It engages the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Department of Labor in a number areas including technical assistance, data collection and review of existing data, and the provision of wage discrimination training to government employees and individuals seeking their assistance. It supports negotiation skills training for women and girls and general public awareness regarding the means available to eliminate pay discrimination.

We’re making progress on fair pay -- the first bill President Obama signed after taking office was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act but much more is needed, and the Paycheck Fairness Act would mark important progress in helping to close the wage gap once and for all.

There is a fillabuster breaking vote today. Lets see how it goes
