W.H.O. Report Links Ingredient in Roundup to Cancer

The world’s most widely-used weed killer can “probably” cause cancer, the World Health Organization said on Friday.

The organization’s cancer arm, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said glyphosate, the active ingredient in the Monsanto herbicide Roundup, was “classified as probably carcinogenic to humans.” It also said there was “limited evidence” that glyphosate was carcinogenic in humans for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Monsanto, the world’s largest seed company, said scientific data did not support the conclusions and called on the group to hold a meeting to explain the findings.

“We don’t know how IARC could reach a conclusion that is such a dramatic departure from the conclusion reached by all regulatory agencies around the globe,” Philip Miller, Monsanto’s vice-president for global regulatory affairs, said in a statement.

The U.S. government says glyphosate is considered safe. It is mainly used on crops like corn and soybeans that are genetically modified to survive it.

Glyphosate has been detected in food, water and in the air after it has been sprayed, according to the report. But its use is generally low in and near homes where people would face the greatest risk of exposure.

The evidence for the W.H.O.’s conclusion was from studies of exposure, mostly agricultural, in the United States, Canada, and Sweden that were published since 2001.

He's wrong - you can't drink a whole quart of it and it not hurt you... We used to use it regularly when we were farming in IA and if I got too much of it on my skin, I got sick from it regularly...like most things, it affects everyone differently.  Besides that, while it might not hurt someone or make them sick right away - who knows what it will do to the body 5, 10 or 25 yrs down the road....  That guy is crazy...

Not so funny Vance... When I first started working in the water treatment field the goal was to have no gylyphosate  in drinking water, per the safe drinking water act of 1974... in 1994 the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for glyphosate was set at 0.7 mcg/L or 700 ppb... I think we can thank Congress and FDA's love affair with Monsanto.  And let's not forget the other, unmentioned chemicals found in Round-up.

Warning labels on the package even say not to get Round-up on your skin - but every drinking water system is safe with a little gylphosate... go figure.

Round up is some nasty stuff...  Unfortunately our government is in bed with them and apparently they can do whatever they want.  Real unfortunate.
