And the shame of it all is, the republicans will say cut spending and the dems will say we need stimulus to boost things. Bout as far apart as one can get.

Wall street is thriving and main street is drowning.

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer as they say. Something will have to happen and I dont think it can be good.

That is so true.

That's why we needed Saul Alinsky..........to drop a popular name.

There are agricultural, food service, and laborer jobs that are up for grabs right now. An estimated 11 million undocumented in the country means maybe 3  million jobs that citizens won't dirty their hands for. I've picked grapes, washed dishes, worked in a tannery, and dug ditches and worked my way up, so that's where my perspective comes from. My mother and her parents came in through Ellis Island in the 1920s, so I hate to see anyone willing to work turned away, but the reality is we need to take care of our unemployed first. If you can't find a job as a cashier leaning against a counter all day, you need to be prepared to work factory, or slaughterhouse, or anything else that puts food on the table. The other side of it is, management needs to pay a living wage and put up with a slightly lower profit margin. I wouldn't ask anyone to run a business at a loss, but the reason unions came to be in the first place was unneccesary greed on the part of owners. It's another two sided solution and both need to be in it for all of us to profit.

Graph of the Day: Illegal immigration has slowed since 2007

Posted by Brad Plumer on January 28, 2013 at 11:00 am

The key reason for the drop is that overall Hispanic immigration from Mexico and Latin America has slowed significantly since the financial crisis hit. And there are multiple theories for why that is:

Demographers say illegal Hispanic immigration — 80 percent of all illegal immigration comes from Mexico and Latin America — isn’t likely to approach its mid-2000 peak again, due in part to a weakened U.S. economy and stronger enforcement but also a graying of the Mexican population.

A key question here is what happens as the U.S. economy recovers. If the recent plunge in illegal immigration was simply due to a dearth of jobs in the United States, then the influx of undocumented workers should soon pick up again.

On the other hand, if the decline in illegal immigration since 2007 has been driven by changes in Mexico and Latin America — older populations, stronger economies — then we might not see as big a rebound in the years ahead. At least some demographers support this second theory. As the Pew Research Center’s Jeffrey Passel told the AP last month, ”We are not going to see a return to the levels of Mexican unauthorized immigration of a decade ago.”

Nope that sounds pretty on the money to me desert.

I took this job nine years ago at what I considered a wage under what I should make. I almost passed it by and waited...Man oh man what a mistake that would have been! Sometimes we do tend to think we are worth more than we are - but then somebody else comes along and pulls you up when you least expect it.

As for gas - I walk to work I moved next door just to be able to do so.

I actually think the unemployment rate is closer to 15%, so I'm 180deg from what you're thinking.

There are SO many people that have simply given up looking for work. Their unemployment benefits ran out, and they're not accounted for anymore. Those people aren't factored in, but really should be accounted for.

I see your logic, in why you're thinking it's in the 4% range, and I'll agree with you that there are people that COULD BE working, but choose not to because they would earn not much more than they would, staying on unemployment benefits, but if you count those people, in all fairness, you must also count the folks that have given up completely.

I'm not sure I understand the logic behind why you think that illegals will start coming in, if unemployment drops 1%. Can you expand on your thought?

OK here's some questions.

What portion of that 7.9% are people gaming the system or people who've been offered work at a living wage  -  say minimum wage plus 50%  -  and have chosen to 'wait for something better' ?

How low will the unemployment rate be when the current migration trend of more people leaving the US than entering illegally reverse itself and we start gaining undocumented workers?

What shouldm the price of gas be?

I have nothing but guesses for the first two and you know I'm anti-fossil fuel on the third, but I'll take a stab at it.

I'd say as many as half have the opportunity to work at a job that would pay as much as they're making on unemployment plus covering childcare and transportation costs that they're not paying now, meaning the 'real' unemployment rate is closer to 4% than 8%.
If the unemployment rate drops another 1% we'll see more undocumented workers coming into the country than leaving.
The real, unsubsidized price of gas is more like what it is Europe if we had true environmental protections in place and we gave a care for the well-being of our grandchildren. Say about $6-$8 a gallon.

Anyone have a better guess?

When the Dow does it is going to drop for several days in a row. Probably go back to 12,000ish.

If some real work was done then maybe, but this is not about tax and spend. It's about pulling back unless we want to end up like Greece.

Even slow recovery was better than NO recovery, so this is very bad news.

I keep waiting for the 14,000+ DOW to readjust itself.

It's coming, me thinks...

I fear that no POTUS, Democrat or Republican, could dig us out of the mess we're currently in.

Sadder days ahead.
