Earthquake in Canada felt in Wisconsin

If you felt the earth shaking this afternoon, it seems you're feeling a quake from far away.

The U.S. Geological Survey originally reported that a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit the border region of Ontario and Quebec in Canada at 12:41 p.m. Central Time. That measure was later revised by the USGS, which reports it's a 5.0 earthquake.

The Toronto Globe and Mail is reporting that an earthquake hit Ontario. We are receiving unconfirmed reports from several readers that the earthquake was felt in the Milwaukee area as well as in Detroit, Montreal and Ohio.

The epicenter of the earthquake is an 832-mile drive from Milwaukee, according to Google Maps.

If you're in Wisconsin and have a good tale about feeling the earthquake, e-mail ***@**** with your story and include contact information, preferably a phone number. Put the word "earthquake" in the subject line. We will try to collect stories for the website later today and for Thursday's newspaper.

We'll post more information as we get it.

nope.  If you read the article, they were asking if anyone had felt the jolts in Wisconsin from the Canadian one.  Supposedly it was felt as far as Milwaukee.  I didn't notice anything.  We have tornado's and lots of rain going on recently.  Today it is drying out.  Weird weather all over the world.

It seems to be the horizontal drilling technique currently being employed in Texas that is causing our problems.  I know we need the natural gas, desperately!  I just want the experts to come up with a better method.

Just popping in, not home until tomorrow night, but I can tell you, we Canadians are just getting hammered right now.  A large part of Alberta (where I live) is still in State of Emergency for flooding.  I got a few pics, I will post them on the weekend.  We had a 5.5 earthquake yesterday in Ontario and a tornado also in Ontario which pretty much devestated a smaller town there.  Everything has come at once.  I do not think Wisconsin is on a fault line, I believe it was the shocks coming from us.  Then again, I can't remember ever having an earthquake in that part of our country...very strange.  Crazy crazy weather happening.  I hadn't heard there may be a connection to natural gas...interesting.  I will have to read up on it.  Hope your all doing great, chat with you this weekend!!

Don't get me wrong.  I am not against drilling for Natural Gas.  We need the clean energy it produces.

Too many drilling companies are using a horizontal drilling technique and this technique is causing a problem.

My other problem with it the air quality is not being monitored sufficiently.  This has turned into a huge issue here in Texas.  And in my hometown, they have gas drilling set up close to a park and school.  Our representative in Congress Dr Michael Burgess is actively working to hold the natural gas companies feet to the fire!  And we need to change our laws in Texas.  Right now, they favor the natural gas industry, not the public.  Public health should be number one.

I want to natural gas drillers to keep drilling.  I just want safe and responsible drilling. And I want our clean air standards to be upheld.

I actually had a representative of a gas company come to my home wanting to do a survey of my property for drilling purposes.  I don't live in the country.  I'm right in town.    I cannot repeat here what I told him!!

I too think all this drilling is going to cause more of these earthquakes. It makes sense.

Dazon:  Is Wisconsin in a fault area?  I'd never considered Wisconsin an earthquake zone.  We're getting quakes in Texas.  We've never really had any before.  It's being caused by natural gas drilling in the Barnett Shale according to geologists.  Click here for info on the Texas quakes:   http://geology.com/news/category/barnett-shale.shtml
