The Obama administration has fired the head of the U.S. Minerals Management Service in response to blistering criticism over lax oversight of offshore drilling, the Associated Press reports.

Elizabeth “Liz” Birnbaum had run the service in the Interior Department since July 2009.

I heard yesterday, she "stepped down under pressure".  Is that different from being fired?  She wasn't even around for a whole year; I wonder if she qualifies for unemployment?  Does she get to keep her government insurance?  Retirement benefits?

I also heard that they are splitting MMS into THREE separate departments.  Do we really need 3 more batches of people to look over?  

Not saying nothing needs to be done, but I've actually seen what can happen in situations like that.
