California’s Budget Surplus

http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/01/14/californias-budget-surplus

"Since the financial meltdown of ’08, California has often been the national poster child for bad state finances.  Huge fights.  Vicious politics.  Scary red ink.  Bloody cuts in spending on fundamentals.  Prisons.  Schools.

And then last week, there was California Governor Jerry Brown, front and center, talking rebound.  California’s budget deficit, he declared, gone.  New money for K-12.  A billion set aside for a rainy day.  It’s kind of amazing.

This hour, On Point:  How did they do that?  California’s fiscal turnaround, and lessons – if they’re there – for the country."

Do you live in New York or California?

I don't care what the issue was, or is, I am glad it is getting fixed, regardless of what caused it.

This isn't a political issue.  Its a spending issue.

So the only thing that matters in all of this is that Schwarzenegger and (Cheney?) started it all?

It had nothing to do with people in positions of authority over stepping their bounds?

It's got nothing to do with towns still being bankrupt?

okay... Im good with that.

Yes, but the bankruptcy of municipalities was a process started under the Schwarzenegger and Cheney administrations

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallejo,_California

"On May 6, 2008, the City Council voted 7-0 to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, at the time becoming the largest California city to do so."

(I only happened to follow this because Vallejo is the ancestral home of the desrt clan.)

The cities are the 'canary in the coal mine'. They were the first to feel the true impact of 8 years of disastrous economic policies and they will be the last to recover.

It was a matter of three things.
1. California voters voted in higher taxes for ppl making over $250,000. a year as well as a higher sales tax across the board.
2. The economy improved somewhat
3. Huge cuts in spending that included schools, programs for the disabled and elderly and higher tuition at CSU and UC.

It was very hard on the schools. However, just recently George Lucas contributed over a billion dollars to California education, so things will be looking up.
PPL talk about what a liberal State we are etc., etc. but I see us as a model for the Nation. I am very proud of Brown and the way things turned out.
