Fukushima nuke plant leaking 330 tons of contaminated water a day

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday ordered increased efforts to stop radiation-contaminated water from spilling into the Pacific Ocean from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant.
A government official told reporters Wednesday that an estimated 300 metric tons (330 tons) of contaminated water was leaking into the ocean every day from the Daiichi plant, which was devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Reuters reported.
The official also said the government believed the leaks had been happening for two years.

Few people are granted access to the radioactive Fukushima exclusion zone in Japan, which remains abandoned and frozen in time on March 11, 2011 — the day a massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused a triple nuclear meltdown in the city. Channel 4's Alex Thomson reports.
The plant’s operators Tokyo Electric Power Company has been building an underground wall by injecting “liquid glass” into the ground in an attempt to contain the contaminated water.

TEPCO has insisted that so far the level of contamination in the ocean does not pose a risk to health.
But some of the contaminated water has made its way through parts of the underground barrier and started to rise above ground.
In response, TEPCO announced that it would begin pumping out the contaminated underground water at a rate of 100 metric tons (110 tons) a day starting this week.
The main government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, told the press that the government was considering providing financial assistance to help with the project.
The cleanup operation is expected to take more than 40 years and cost $11 billion, Reuters reported.
Reuters contributed to this report.

The idea of using a power with such toxic waste and saying, " Oh, we'll figure out a way to deal with it in the future," is more than just irresponsible. It's stupid.

What other animal will destroy it's home ?? It makes me think of the virus that almost killed me. Are we no better a viron ?
No other mammal I can think of would make it's food inedible, its environment toxic all for what ???

It isn't needed. Clean alternatives do exist.

oh my gosh. So what is one to do? Im assuming you own your property and are there by stuck with the situation and even trying to sell, who would buy it? Does this lower your property values as well?

I dont own property for a reason, this is just one of many of them. I can up and go if something like this happens near me. My heart goes out to ya. So how do they make this safe? Is it even possible to make it safe?

By the way, welcome to CE

Too true, everybody here was worried about Yucca Mountain, surprise the City of Parump is the newest destination. What can we do, "It is safe". Consider this, the amount of time it, the waste will spend traveling by rail from all over the country.

As they open a nuclear waste dump less than 50 miles from my house.

Yeah, they say its not a health problem but they won't let anyone near the site to stop the mess.... These suckers cannot come out right and just say, "we've got no clue as to what we are doing".  I could and would appreciate it.  (At least that wouldn't be a lie....)

Now I gotta tell ya, when this thing happened it scared me, even with everyone telling us all was okay. I didnt believe them then and I dont believe them now. First it was the radiated air that got all the way down into the states as far as Va last I heard. This stuff has been flowing into the ocean at this rate for how long? And they say not health problems, dont worry, be happy! We will see in about 5-6 years, if we get a major uptick in cancers that include the young. And if we wanted to rid ourselves of these things? Where would we even put it? Where we were safe from it?

I'd have to agree with you at this point.  This technology is certainly not new and we have 0 ideas how to clean up after situations like this.

I wonder what the real impact of an accident like this is?  I mean, we'll probably have to wait 100 or 1000 years to really know.

This is horrifying to me.  A good example of destroying our own world.  Obviously, not intentionally but there is so much risk involved with nuclear energy that I am not for it.  at all.

We've got to do a lot better than this.... we are killing ourselves at every turn.

I believe nuclear is still a great option, but safe guards are needed and placement is critical.

A while back, I went on a rant about alternative energy.  When nuclear energy began, we were told that "this would answer our prayers in the future regarding safe energy" (or something along those lines).  What we never took the time to do was figure out what we needed to do so store the waste by product and what to do in the event of emergencies.

As typical for us humans, we apparently thought... "we'll cross that bridge when we get there".  Ain't that grand?  Now we've got this to deal with and other alternative energy sources are producing a different kind of toxic waste.

We've got to do a lot better than this.... we are killing ourselves at every turn.

This is a  disaster and the horrific consequences continue to unfold.
It is a very good lesson to us, nuclear energy is *not* the answer to our energy quest. Chernobyl is dead and will be for centuries...what a mess we have made.
Anyway, I recommend *not* buying Japanese food products. They were still exporting contaminated rice a few months ago.
We have a lot of label checking to do these days, what with the bugs, radiation and G knows what else, eh?
