Obama to Texas students: 'We're poised for progress'

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/09/18153358-obama-to-texas-students-were-poised-for-progress?lite

Kicking off his latest jobs tour at a high school in Texas, President Barack Obama told students that making quality education affordable and accessible was a key ingredient to jump-starting the U.S. economy.

Speaking at Manor New Technology High School in Austin to 400 students and teachers, Obama praised the school’s innovative education approaches, saying that both superior education and more policies to help the middle class were key to creating good jobs and attracting skilled workers.

“Thanks to the grit and determination of the American people, we’ve cleared away the rubble of the worst economic crisis in our lifetimes,” said Obama, “We’re poised for progress.”

Speaking at a high school in Austin, President Obama says, "our economy can't succeed unless our young people have the skills that they need to succeed and that's what's happening here."

To “reignite the true engine of middle-class growth,” the president said, the country has to become a magnet for good jobs, help people develop the education and skills for the jobs, and ensure workers can “achieve a decent living.”

With a veiled jab at inaction in Congress, Obama said where he could, he was “just going to go ahead and take actions on my own” and later today would be issuing executive orders “that I'm convinced will spur innovation and help businesses create more jobs.”

Those two executive orders, first laid out in the president’s State of the Union address, will focus on strengthening manufacturing and ensuring government data is available in machine-readable formats.

Obama praised Manor Tech for the way it is working to equip its students. The school, focused on preparing students for STEM careers in science and mathematics, selects students each year through a blind lottery, and has won plaudits for its academic success since its opening in 2007.

The president pointed out how students had been putting their knowledge to work, pointing out projects he saw on his tour of the school, including building musical instruments from mathematics equations and the use of robots and other technology.

And, according to the president, too much public speaking can never be a bad thing. “While most high school students in America give a handful of speeches by the time they graduate,” he noted, “a student at this school might give as many as 200.”

Obama joked, “That’s a lot of speeches. I can relate.”

But, the president pointed out, one reason the school has been a success is that it has been available to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

“The majority of students in Manor don’t come from wealth or privilege,” Obama said, noting the success the school had not only in keeping its students in school but helping them attend college.

“Folks around here are doing something right,” Obama added, “and I think the rest of the country can learn from what you’re doing -- because I’ve always believed that the best ideas usually don't start in Washington, they trickle up to Washington.  So I’ve come to listen and learn and highlight some of the good work that's being done.”

“There are too many kids in America who are not getting the same kinds of opportunity through no fault of their own,” said Obama. “We can do better than that. Every young person in America deserves a world class education. We’ve got an obligation to give it to them.”

“We’re not just a collection of individuals, we’re one American family,” said the president. “If we follow Manor's example, if we give every child the chance to climb new ladders of opportunity, if we equip every American with the skills and education they need to succeed in the jobs of the future, if we make sure that hard work pays off and responsibility's rewarded, if we fight to keep America a place where you can make it if you try, then you're not just going to be the ones that prosper, we'll all prosper, and together we'll write the next chapter in America's great history.”

Who would help him? Have we elected anyone capable on either side to "lead the way"?

We are in deep, guys.

"Do you think if he did that the Republican party would set their agenda aside? " No. Neither would the Dems.
I know it is all Fantasy but if they didn't, he would be blameless. Think about it, the first President in History to go down begging for help to Lead this Nation. I would shoot Fireworks for his Birthday!

Okay, they both get spanked. So let's move on.
What can he do?
"The fact of the matter is, he can't do a whole hell of a lot"
I agree brice. He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

He has a terrible balancing act and I admire his intelligence and tenacity in that he is still trying.
I keep saying it but it is true...he has not made me real happy. Partly due to the suspicion I have that he, like congress and everyone in Washington are in the pockets of big business. He is working with what he has got.

The government *is* like a bad reality show and it is very sad. However, ranting on about what a loser he is or wanting to see him brought to his knees does not help the economy or the great divide we face in this country.

"I am asking *what* he as the executive branch of Government can do to start improving the state of the economy. "

The fact of the matter is, he can't do a whole hell of a lot.  The same goes for Bush.... but Bush gets all of the blame?  In all fairness, if Bush is to get blame, so is Obama.

So, you really just want to see him humbled?

Do you think if he did that the Republican party would set their agenda aside?

Ah, Glass c'mon.

I am not trying to blame anyone. I am not defending the President where he has done poorly. I am not trying to get into the same old negative run around we all get into when we discuss these issues.
I am asking *what* he as the executive branch of Government can do to start improving the state of the economy.

Brice brings out a good point. Why do the Dems blame Bush but give Obama a free pass? After 5(+-) Years? Still Blaming Bush? Let’s be Real.
“Tell me what he should do Glass, I am sincere in asking your opinion.”
Simple, He should Face The Nation (like a man), admit he is incompetent, set his agendas aside, and beg both Parties to set their agendas aside to work together to help and show him how to  lead us out of this mess. He would go down in History as the Most Caring President The U.S has ever had! If this didn’t work, I would stand behind him.

"Blaming Obama is surface cleaning, you know it, don't you?"

WHAT?  Everyone sits around and blames other Presidents (primarily Bush) for everything, but this guy can't get blame for anything that is happening now?  When can he take some blame?

I don't think the guy is the sole reason for what is happening today, but if you are going to blame Bush or any other President for things, it is only fair that you'd have the cajones to blame this President for the things that aren't going so well today.....  (Our "politically correct agenda" won't allow that?)  It's okay to say that some things are better and it is more than okay to say that some things have not improved 1 bit, and its okay to say that some things are worse....

Bush and others have been blamed for things that was out of their control.  Today we have the "congress of no" to blame things on....  We know that Obama had 2 years with nothing but democrats around him, but that gets swept under the rug time and time again.  If Bush and others can take the blame, so can Obama and its time to get around worrying what people are going to think about you if you think something the guy is ram-rodding stinks.... it is okay!

This has nothing to do with race and I am over hearing about that being an issue.

You can be glib, but I am asking you seriously.
I am not in defense or attack mode. I understand your point of view. However, what do you think he can do right now to improve the problems we are facing?

It really is true that the wars, Wall street games and the banking system have contributed to the fall of the economy. Obama is stifled by congress in many of the moves he wants to make to do what he thinks will improve the economy. In my opinion he hasn't pushed farther and hard enough, but then if he did he would be accused of being a dictator.
So now we have this lovely democracy with all its checks and balances and nothing is getting done, little is improving. I think the improvement we do see is a result of what desrt stated was the oil drilling, which is eroding the earth and poisoning the well water. I am horrified this is allowed to happen, but it is and that is because everyone is living for this very temporary dollar.
I don't have answers but blaming Obama is a diversion. Tell me what he should do Glass, I am sincere in asking your opinion.

I’m sorry, I missed that that point and it is a good one, Kudos! What use is it to clean and leave the surface Dirty?

I can’t argue the fact he is doing ““a petty good job”
After 5 Years (+-) the Blame Game is getting old. We do not have a Leader. Obama has done nothing but lead Diversion Scams since he has been in office. OK, we get it. Go on vacation for the next 3 years and we will continue to run the country without you. The US doesn’t need a Cameo President for Drama. We already have to many Realty Shows. Have Fun!

I am not always happy with him, but he is doing a pretty good job with what he is up against.
We need another FDR to start this country rolling again but we don't have him.
Like I said, Obama has disappointed me but I really think he is doing a petty good job for what he is up against.
The wars have emptied the coffers, the banks and corporations run this country and they have been running it for awhile.
Blaming Obama is surface cleaning, you know it, don't you?

That’s why I made that comment. It didn’t strike me as the type of speech proper for High School students. He could have left out the propaganda. My neighbor is on SSD because he is about 250lbs over weight. It is true my Tax Dollars are paying for it and when I need SS I doubt it will be there for me. But, I’m not going to go to his kids and complain about it.

This is what I thought of when I read it-

"Obama said where he could, he was “just going to go ahead and take actions on my own” and later today would be issuing executive orders"

As a scholar on Constitutional Law, the President missed a perfect teaching opportunity. He had a chance to explain about the division of powers between our different branches of gov't. and how dangerous it is for one branch to overstep it's limits. Even if it's done with the best of intentions to try and save the country from a bunch of bvtthead obstructionists, it sets a bad precedent.
