Grayson Under Fire for Taking Opponent's Quotes Out of Context in 'Taliban' Ad

Grayson Under Fire for Taking Opponent's Quotes Out of Context in 'Taliban' Ad

Published September 28, 2010 | FoxNews.com

Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson is coming under bipartisan fire for releasing an ad that compares Republican opponent Daniel Webster to the Taliban and takes his quotes on the role of women blatantly out of context.

The narrator in the ad accuses "Taliban Dan Webster" of wanting to "impose his radical fundamentalism on us," interspersing snippets of a speech Webster gave at a 2009 Christian event. Without any context, Webster is showing saying, "wives submit yourself to your own husband" and "she should submit to me. That's in the Bible."

But Webster released the unedited original footage, which shows the congressional candidate preaching the exact opposite. In the full tape, Webster urges listeners to write down a Bible verse, so long as it doesn't have anything to do with wives submitting to their husbands.

"Don't pick the ones that say she should submit to me. That's in the Bible, but pick the ones that you're supposed to do -- so instead you love your wife ... as opposed to wives submit yourself to your own husband," he said.

Webster, former speaker of the Florida House, called out Grayson on his congressional campaign website and linked to a FactCheck.org writeup that accused the congressman of manipulating the footage. He said in a statement to FoxNews.com that honesty would give him the edge in the tight race for Florida's District 8 seat.

"While I don't yet have the financial resources to match Alan Grayson and fight back against his despicable distortions, I do have the truth on my side," Webster said.

Grayson defended the ad Tuesday, telling MyFoxOrlando that his campaign had to "compress" the Webster speech in order to "convey it." He denied taking words out of context.

"That's completely not true," he said. "He said what he said and he's been trying to run from his record now, now that it's been exposed."

Grayson campaign manager Susannah Randolph told the Orlando Sentinel that Webster is tied to the Institute in Basic Life Principles, which teaches women to be subservient to their husbands. "He is speaking at a group that teaches that women should be submissive to men," Randolph told the newspaper. "He's always pushed an agenda that is anti-woman."

Florida's 8th Congressional District race is considered a toss-up and a prize for House Republicans who repeatedly have sparred with Grayson over his over-the-top comments. Grayson has attracted attention before for claiming Republicans want sick Americans to "die quickly" and comparing former Vice President **** Cheney to a vampire.

However, little outside polling has been done on the congressional race.

Democratic pollster Doug Schoen called Grayson's new ad "absolutely egregious" and suggested it could backfire.

"This is way over the line," Schoen told Fox News. "What you learn as a political strategist is that voters don't react well to outrageous lies."

The ad mixed in claims about Webster's positions on women's rights -- that he would deny rape victims the right to have an abortion and deny medical care to battered women. Schoen said contrasts about abortion views would have been fine, but that the mischaracterization of Webster's quotes was "beyond the pale."

Fox is to news what MSNBC is to news.  Olberman is the Beck of MSNBC.  Any number of televised news is biased.  It's always going to be that way.

Okay! Here is one example of the honesty of fox: Link to research is this one.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/jan/28/barack-obama/tax-cut-95-percent-stimulus-made-it-so/

There's a statistic that I keep harping on. The recent "mood of the nation" poll done by the New York Times indicates that a third of America believes that taxes for most people have gone up under President Obama, while only eight percent believe the truth: that President Obama has lowered taxes for most Americans. For those who prefer hard numbers, the stimulus package that is so vilified by Republicans provided a tax cut for 94.3% of working families in the United States. So why over four times as many people in America believe the lies about President Obama, as opposed to the truth? Probably because of conservative media hacks like Rush Limbaugh, who knowingly lie to their audiences about Obama's record on air for hours a day.

LAKE MARY, Fla. (WOFL,FOX35) - U.S. Democratic Representative Alan Grayson has defended his latest political ads which calls his Republican opponent 'Taliban Dan '.

Watch the Video Segments Below>>>

Speaking on FOX 35 Tuesday morning, Grayson said that his ads did not take Daniel Webster's comments from a speech he made out of context.

"That's completely not true," Grayson said. "He said what he said and he's been trying to run from his record now, now that it's been exposed."

"It's not that I'm taking his words out of context," he added. "It's that he's so embarrassed by his positions he won't defend them."

Later Grayson added.

"It's a 30 minute speech," he said. "And a 30 second ad of course we had to compress it in order to be able to convey it."

As for his comparison of Webster to the Taliban, Grayson refused to back down.

"The Taliban are radical fundamentalists who want to impose their views on everyone else through the law," he said. " Daniel Webster and the sect he belongs to the IBLP are radical fundamentalists who want to impose their views on the rest of us through the law."

"What's the difference?"

Monday night, Webster appeared on FOX 35 news and said his words were indeed taken out of context.

"It's an awful thing to say," Webster said. "Because it's wrong."

"Actually I said the opposite of what they are showing," he added. "They are showing one half on one sentence when I was talking to a group of couples about praying for their wives."

In the speech, Webster was referring to verses from the Bible.

"I said this, " he said Monday night. "Why don't not you pick the ones that say 'submit to me'. All they used was 'submit to me' so I said the exact opposite of what they are actually saying."

"It's wrong and it's over the top," he added. "Way beyond what it ought to be."

Webster's wife Sandy appeared with her husband Tuesday night and said she is offended by the ad as well.

"We are dealing with a man who's lied about us in several ads," she said. "It's horrible; it's degrading to me as a woman."
