"The government of Mexico has reportedly launched an investigation into an incident on the border involving the rescue of a suspected gunrunner by cartel convoy of 30 vehicles last week.
As Borderland Beat first reported, a suspected gun-runner in a white GMC Sierra SUV with Texas license plates drove across the international bridge from Presidio, Texas carrying high-powered weapons.
Mexican customs agents at the point of entry in Ojinaga, Chihuahua stopped the vehicle for inspection and discovered te cache of weapons including AR15 assault weapons, bullet-proof vests and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
However, shortly after placing the gun runner under arrest, a convoy of 30 late model SUVs filled with armed cartel gunmen arrived at the border crossing and rescued the suspect along with the weapons.
The brazen rescue, which has widely been ignored by the media occurred last Friday around 2 p.m. and have many raising concerns of corruption on both sides of the border.
According to Jorge Vasquez Valencia, the spokesman of an auto defense armed group, the officers reportedly made no calls for help.
“For something like this to happen, there had to be corruption involved,” Valencia said, “Alarms in the U.S. and Mexico should have been raised the moment a convoy of 30 vehicles filled with armed men were headed for the heavily secure border station.”
“The place is a highly secured location with a significant presence of Mexican military along with federal police on one side and U.S. border agents on the other, how could something like this happen?” he said.
Valencia also explained how it is legal to purchase of AR15 assault rifles in Texas. However, the purchase of rocket-propelled grenade launchers are illegal and would draw the attention of federal law enforcement agencies.
For years, the Ojinaga drug plaza remained under the control of the Juarez cartel. However, the Sinaloa Federation have since become the dominant cartel in the region.
U.S. government officials have thus far not commented on the incident."
