Gunman dead, 3 injured in Alabama hospital shooting

A gunman opened fire on a police officer and two hospital employees at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama early Saturday morning. According to WAFF, News 48, the incident took place at about 4:00 a.m. on the hospital’s fifth floor.

Birmingham Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Johnny Williams told WAFF that the gunman positioned himself in a hallway and shot at the officer and the hospital staff members as they stepped out of an elevator. Another police officer reportedly came around the corner, alerted by the noise, and fatally shot the gunman.

The injured officer and hospital workers were evacuated to University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. Police have not released their names, but said that their injuries are not life-threatening.

Investigators have not identified the gunman or said what he was doing at the hospital before the shootings. They are currently studying surveillance camera footage to determine exactly what happened.

Sgt. Williams told Alabama.com that police are confident that the unnamed shooter acted alone and that the attack was an isolated incident.

Often I think the best thing anyone can do is be aware, of themselves, their surroundings and their instincts.
I'll cross the street if I feel something odd about the people walking towards me.
Like you teko, if the 'vibe' becomes filled with anger, I'm out of there.

On the other hand, I refuse to live in fear.
When you look at the numbers of people in this country, the number who are violent is still very very small.

I do a lot of "people watching", too, but you can't always tell which one is going to try to take you out.  Some of the most mild mannered are the very worst.

We have a lot of shootings, too, and I think it's getting worse.

That is so True! Everytime I go out and am in a crowd now I watch people and if I start hearing arguing or angry tones, I leave and go home. I have gotten very paranoid of late. Seems to be shootings every day now around where I live. Never used to happen

More people commit suicide, at this time of year, than any other, because so many people are depressed.  I realize that this guy didn't kill himself, but he put himself in a position to be killed.

It's almost scary to go anywhere; you never know which person walking beside/behind is going to go postal and start shooting.
