In a quick search I found this, not conclusive but definitely pointing out that there are more young people being killed by the cops than we are aware of.
Every 36 hours, a black person is killed by a police officer
In early July, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, a grassroots organization, released a report entitled “Report on the Extrajudicial Killing of 120 Black People”. The report examines the murders of 120 black men and women by police officers, security guards, or self-appointed law enforcers between January 1 and June 30, 2012. According to the report, the killings are considered “extrajudicial” because they happen without a trial or due process and are against international human rights standards. The most important and astounding revelation in the report is during those six months, a person of African descent was executed every 36 hours. Therefore, police violence against black people occurs far more often than reported. Rather than the exception, this sort of systemic racist violence is the norm.
There are other important revelations from the report. Many of the 120 killed were young. About 11% were children under 18 years old, 18% were 18 to 21, 40% were 22 to 31, 17% were 32 to 41, 8% were 42 to 51, 4% were over 52, and 2% were of undetermined age. This means that more than two-thirds of those killed were below the age of 31.
These extrajudicial killings occur nationwide.

I could only find 3 stories about "innocent teens" killed by cops in the last 18 months. One carrying a "toy gun" and the other carrying a "toy knife" According to census numbers in 2012, there were about 26 million teenagers in the country. That boils down to 1 in 8,666,666.
There were 53 shark attacks last year.
1000 people get stuck by lightning a year.
In 2008 there were 274.6 aggravated assaults per 100,000
1 in 8.6 million is pretty rare. Kids are far more likely to die from suicide or in a car wreck.
" But, since cases like the 13 year old killed by cops are rare"
Not rare enough.
What about Oscar Grant who was killed by a cop who claimed he thought he was grabbing his taser ??
However, I agree this too is sad. I miss the good old days:(
I'd agree with the public outcry. I just don't get that way of thinking. I heard someone around here say that the "old man was mentally disturbed" as some kind of a lame reasoning tool. "He needed help. This was his cry for help" where the next things out of this persons mouth. I don't know... if this guy really wanted help, why did he not put the gun down and listen to the cop trying to talk him down? (His intent was not on getting help, that is why he shot a cop who was not holding a gun....)
I'm not a big pro cop guy. I know there are some grand douche bags out there on police forces all over this country. We've got a couple of real a$$ hats here locally that I really never want to have a conversation with. But, since cases like the 13 year old killed by cops are rare, I am going to give the benefit of doubt to the cops on that one.
I would love to live in a world were all of the bad guys would give the cops an opportunity to talk the bad guys down from creating havoc. It's not likely that we will ever get there and I think we all know that.
There would have been a Public Outcry (including on this forum) if the Cop would have killed the 88 Year Old Man.
I found it really interesting.
Quite the juxtaposition from that 13y/o wielding the toy gun the other day...
