The school system that I retired from, last year, has a system like this. They've put up 8' high fences around the campuses, so there's only one way in/out, unless you have keys to open the gates (only employees have those). All employees are background checked and finger printed prior to employment; they must wear a picture badge and are to check sign in at the office when first entering the campus, and sign out when leaving. Visitors must check in at the office, their drivers license is run for a background check, then they are issued a "Visitor" sticker that must be worn while they are on campus and is to be turned in at the office when they leave campus.
The thing that bothered me about the quick background check is that it only checked to see if a person was a sex offender or not. It did not check for other types of offenses. One could come in with a hidden gun, pass the background check because they aren't on the sex offender list and still commit mass murder. IMO, schools should have metal detectors at the front doors, manned by an armed police officer.
I agree, and think most parents would. Isn't it sad though that we even have to think this way? Or worse that our young children have to? Such innocence lost. I'm even after my son's preschool/daycare to implement security measures such as keeping the door locked and parents have to buzz in. We haven't had anything like this happen here yet, but the key word is yet. It isn't right we should have to be afraid to send our babies to school. It just isn't right.
