John Boehner: Ending Abortion Is 'One Of Our Most Fundamental Goals This Year'

As hundreds of thousands of people braved sub-freezing temperatures in Washington, D.C., on Friday to join the anti-abortion protest March for Life, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) took the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to banning abortion in America for good.

Addressing the crowd at the National Mall via video broadcast, Boehner said it's time for anti-abortion activisits to "commit ourselves to doing everything we can to protect the sanctity of life." Step one, he said, is making permanent the Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to pay for abortions except in cases of rape or incest.

"For the new Congress, that means bringing together a bipartisan pro-life majority and getting to work," Boehner said. "In accordance with the will of the people, we will again work to pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, formally codifying the Hyde Amendment."

Boehner said he will make it a national priority to "help make abortion a relic of the past."

"Let that be one of our most fundamental goals this year," he said.

The March for Life attracted a diverse crowd of young and old protesters from across the country. Hundreds of parents had bundled up their infants and toddlers and strapped protest signs to their strollers. Michael Kennedy, 33, and his wife Bethany, who is pregnant, drove their four children down from Westerly, Rhode Island to stand in 20-degree weather on the Mall.

"They're troopers," Bethany told HuffPost. "We felt like we have a responsibility just to be a witness to everyone else, to see that this is life, our children. We needed to be here."

Several lawmakers made it out to the protest to address the crowd in person. Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) touted a bill she recently introduced that would strip Title X family planning funds from Planned Parenthood, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) delivered a sermon that called for a "spiritual cleansing."

"Our nation is adrift, adrift in a wilderness where right and wrong have become subservient to a hedonism of the moment," Paul said. "I believe our country is in need of a spiritual cleansing."

He added, "We much preach a gospel so full of compassion, a gospel so full of justice that it cannot be resisted. Then and only then will the law again protect the innocent."

I said Roe would not be over turned and if a state passes an anti-abortion bill then it will be taken to the Supreme Ct and they will overturn it. But stopping public funding for abortion with the few exceptions is great.

If you (M and F) want to have sex, choose not to use protection and get pregnant then why should anyone but those 2 people pay for an abortion?

”Teko, I really can't see Roe vs Wade being overturned. I just really can't”
Just another diversion. What next, Gay Marriage?

Yes. Not to scare you but my state was one that has gotten a little crazy.  I do generally appreciate being from a conservative state and I do for the most part like our govenor BUT . . . they went for the hearbeat bill.  They were trying to ban abortion as soon as a heartbeat could be detected which would be around 6 weeks.  It passed in my state's 'house' but got killed in the senate.  It challenged roe vs wade.

Our senate is GOP majority and it still got killed.  I do think many Repubicans will still hold off on banning all abortion (I agree with late term abortion being banned unless life and death).

I guess I should clarify. Republicans, not meaning everyday citizens, the republicans who are in governor positions in the states. This has been going on for over a year now with refusing funding for things like planned parenthood and the like. I heard Mississippi I think it was is down to one facility and they are trying to run it out of state as well. Its not the republican voters that concern me, its the teaparty, fringe  of the republican party that does.

What a really positive approach to looking at things.  I think that was well said.

Teko, I really can't see Roe vs Wade being overturned.  I just really can't.  So many Republicans are moderate on this issue such as mysellf.  Again, the far far right and Christian base of the party has made it seem like every Republican is strictly for life only.  I'm in the middle on the issue as are many of my companions in the party.  If it came down to it, I'd speak up about it.

Someone said on here a few months back that roe vs wade would never be overturned because it would take the supreme court to do it. Well, if they accomplish this in the states, and I believe there are 24 states with republican governors? it kind of serves the same purpose, does it not?

Sad part is, no matter what side of the fence you find yourselves on, we all pay the price in a country and is going down hill quickly on many fronts.  Not only in our country, but globally.

I just wish everybody would put down their biases, and criticisms, and set out everyday looking for people that they could help.  We could, as Americans, pull ourselves up by the boot straps and get through all of this, if we could stop pointing fingers and be part of the solution. We all have it in ourselves, we just need to decide to do it.

I think it is funny that the republicans are equally as reluctant to get anything else accomplished.  So much reform is needed everywhere, and they want to concentrate on abortion?  I guess its their way to deflect doing nothing.

The GOP previously announced its goal of making sure President Obama was a one-term president.  I wish them the same success with this goal.

I really do think the argument in these social issues is something that reflects poorly on the right wing.

I agree. It must be very difficult for those Republicans who really don't agree with their party's social issues.
For me it is those issues that define my party that causes me to align myself with it.
However, I am learning party alliances are a lot more complex for a lot of people. Probably why so many people end up as Independents.

"Their hope is to accomplish this on the state level."

If they do, they will get voted out on the state level as well in 2014..Then it will be overturned by the dems that take control..

Sigh.  So simple.  If you are against abortion, choose not to have one.  Choice does not mean you must abort.  I really do think the argument in these social issues is something that reflects poorly on the right wing.
