American Voting Rights History

http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/vot/intro/intro_b.php
First of all let me say thank you for having me in your group.  I've enjoyed hearing what you all have to say and look forward to hearing more, especially during this campaign season.  But I must say I'm shocked that there is a "debate" going on in the group about which Americans citizens should be "allowed" to vote.  The story of the murders in 1964 of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner have been in my consciousness for as long as I can remember.  The stories of the suffrage movement leading to the ratification of the 19th Amendment have been with me just as long.  These stories are all our stories, as Americans.  I am currently working with men and women in my voter registration activities that remember the dogs, and remember the fire hoses.  The idea that any of us would have the gall to question any other American's access to their Constitutional Rights (especially based on their financial income level) is very upsetting to me.  It has been on my mind since it was brought up and I thought I'd share a link to our history, our shared American history.  Thanks for listening.

I didn't know we were limiting rights based on income level...

I'd like to share one more thing before I hang up my keyboard on this issue and that is, in addition to the nausea that I've described earlier, I'm also doing some chortling to myself as I drive around this glorious gated subdivision that I call home.  Imagining what the reaction would be if "people like me" started suggesting in mixed company that perhaps men shouldn't be allowed to vote on women's health issues because they literally, in this case at least,  have no skin in the game.  Or that straight men really shouldn't vote on equality because what do they know about being gay?  Or how 'bout banning Christians from voting? That sounds good to me.   As someone who believes deeply that no religion should dictate public policy, those Christians really get on my nerves man.  I'd like to exclude them from the polls.  Oh! and carnivores, they'll need to go too.  Because as a vegetarian I simply cannot have them chiming in on agricultural and environmental issues.  I'm sure there are more groups that I'd like to ban but I gotta run.  I've got some American citizens that need to register to vote.  Good thing I'm a deputized registrar in the great state of Texas...

Given our country's history securing the voting rights of ALL its citizens I find a discussion of removing / reducing access to voting sickening.  It literally makes me queazy.  I think about the men and women that died and suffered and fought and got sprayed with fire hoses and bitten by dogs to secure voting access for ALL of us in this democracy.  I don't think it's something that should be "debated".  Litigate your case, for lower taxes, or whatever the issue may be but don't argue that the solution for this problem is restricting access to voting.

Yes, our dogs are friends. If you consider my pit bull trying to steal his doberman's ball a friendship (they seem to).

Hmmm.......... apparently, you two have a relationship that the rest of us aren't privy to, since we, probably, don't frequent your dog park.

I see that Paige only joined yesterday and you two are bosom buddies. Probably some "inside information" being tossed around, here?

So, after my RANT about who should & shouldn't get to vote, based on whether you pay taxes or not...

I'll agree with everyone above me.

The MAJOR development on the board as of late, has been voter-ID's, and the Right pushing for them, and the Left crying foul (and "bad timing").

I'll agree with Barb. How, in this day and age, can ANYONE survive without having a photo-id of SOME description?

Anyway, see you at the dog-park over the weekend. Tomorrow's supposed to be $hitty, but Sunday's going to be GLORIOUS!

Welcome to the group.

I agree with teko that the controversy isn't over the right to vote; it's over the necessity of having to present an ID at the polls.

I can't argue with the idea that the timing probably isn't just right, with such an important election just around the corner; but we can't do  much of anything else without a photo ID, so why should we get to vote, without one.

I don't understand how people who don't have photo ID, manage to get medical treatment, have bank accounts, obtain SS benefits, etc, in this day and age with nearly everything, from driving a car to using a debit/credit card, requiring a photo ID.   I have a 93 year old Aunt whose driver's license expired last year and I took an entire day to travel to her city and take her to the appropriate office to get a photo ID, so she'd have it when she had to go to the doctor/hospital, bank or do other business.

"Hypothetical"?........... hmmmmm   I guess that's putting it somewhat mildly, isn't it, desrt?   LOL  :-)

I'd call it a great group of people who have very passionate ideas.

It was me... ME, ME, ME.

I'm the one that said that if you've got no skin in the game, then you shouldn't get a say-so in being able to raise the taxes of others (that just happen to be better off than you).

Tell me something... if I went to the 5th-Ward right now, and polled the first 100 people I saw (which would make it a 100% Democrat poll), and asked them if they wanted income taxes raised in order to generate revenue, so that medicaid & food stamps & other hand-out programs... what do you think their answer would be?

Raising the taxes has ZERO impact on their pocket, except that they'll receive possible MORE free stuff.

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Put a man on gov't assistance, he'll eat for a lifetime (and never have to work again, nor will he even try, as he's getting FREE STUFF).

That's the point that I was trying to make.

It's just an opinion I have... don't get your ginch in a knot;-)

It's the same thing as me thinking that 18 y/o's should be allowed to vote. Anyone under the age of 22 shouldn't be allowed to vote, because they're either a) too stupid, b) too influenced by their parents, or c) have been recently brainwashed by their professors and haven't had a chance to make an intelligent political affiliation decision yet (be it Right OR Left).

Thank you for your perspectives.

"I'm shocked that there is a "debate" going on in the group about which Americans citizens should be "allowed" to vote."

Well, things can get sorta 'hypothetical' around here sometimes, but you have to admit we live in shocking times. Six weeks from now, we could potentially have yet another world leader who is dismissive of half his people's opinion. I guess we should feel lucky it's only half.

Welcome to our group. And thank you very much for sharing this information with us.

Most of the controversy here has not been (ones right to vote) rather the requirement of having a photo id to do it. I take issue with it because of its timing in particular and its up to ones personal opinion as to whether this is being done or not to affect voter turnout. I think it is being done for exactly that reason, others do not see it that way. Couple the photo id on top of diminished early voting times and hours in the various states and I think the intention is clear. So to me it is a round about and devious way to keep the masses from voting.......What say you
