Americans blame Republicans more than Democrats for "fiscal cliff"

(Reuters) - Americans blame Republicans in Congress more than congressional Democrats or President Barack Obama for the current "fiscal cliff" crisis, as the deadline approaches for action to avert big tax increases and spending cuts, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Thursday.

When asked who they believed to be more responsible for the "fiscal cliff" situation, 27 percent blamed Republicans in Congress, 16 percent blamed Obama and 6 percent pointed to Democrats in Congress. The largest percentage - 31 percent - blamed "all of the above."

A similar breakdown was found in response to questions about the economy. Asked who was responsible for the national unemployment rate, the poll found 23 percent chose Republicans in Congress, 16 percent said Obama and 7 percent said Democrats in Congress, while 32 percent picked "all of the above."

The U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.7 percent in November, according to Labor Department figures.

"Fiscal cliff" refers to the tax increases on nearly all Americans and the deep, automatic government spending cuts due to begin in January - possibly pushing the United States back into recession - if lawmakers do not take action.

Sixty-seven percent of Americans polled in the online survey said the impending "fiscal cliff" was not affecting their holiday spending.

The survey of 1,477 Americans, interviewed online, was conducted December 23-27. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

I absolutely agree that they aren't up for a raise either.  They've not earned it.

Pride and obligations get in the way of politicians.  That stupid party line is like a lasso that is keeping part of the herd "in line", while others are distancing themselves from the party line.

The republicans have lost contact with reality.  This is not the same political party is was even a decade ago.  It has gone to extremes and has forced the other side to fracture a little and forced them too to go to extremes.

Some pretty decent offers have been offered up but concessions aren't being made.  (Some pretty ridiculous things have been offered too.... those "$hits and giggles" things.)  The President himself said it... im paraphrasing but more or less he said that the American people are getting tired of this.

Bah....  I don't know why I hold on to the thought that something good will come of this.  I don't know why I feel that someone, somewhere will compromise and something palatable will fall out of DC for all Americans to be okay with.

By no means do I think any of these people are up for a raise..... they aren't handling business.  Based on performance?  They owe us money.... all of them owe us money.

I am hoping that the Republican party as a whole can distance from the tea party.  I've said it before, they do not speak for the majority of Republicans.  They started out gaining favor because originally, they had an authentic purpose that I could support----  general idea of less taxes, smaller government and fiscal responsibility.  But wow, what happened?  Power and craziness took over and now they make no sense at all.  They've gone overboard with everything and now I find little I agree with.  Less taxes doesn't mean no taxes.  Smaller government doesn't mean no government.  Fiscal responsibilty doesn't mean never spending a dime on anything.  Crazy, power hungry and a killer to the party is what they have become.

In all seriousness, and it pains me to say this-----  I do think they should have accepted the 400,000 deal Obama made and maybe then negotiated more cuts by the Dems.  I don't blame any one person on the right in particular because in politics, you have to get agreement to get anything done.  So yes, I do blame the Republican party as a whole.  They needed to come down from a million and then be firm with some more cuts and this could have been a done deal.  They blew it.  Hopefully the session today results in something.

2012 was a start, we will continue to get the obstructionist teaparty types in 2014. Yes, I think unless things change drastically, and really really soon, you will see a major shift in congress in 2014. The only reason some of them are still there is that no one ran against them.

Did someone above say something along the lines that a solution revolves around the blame?  Blame has nothing to do with a solution.  If something is broken, fix it.  Who broke it is for a court of law.... who broke it has nothing to do with a solution.

"This can all be changed if we vote in 2014".... we all voted in 2012, it isn't changing.

So I'm watching the political commentators go at it again. One of them just said "if they agree to this, what's in it for them?"  They weren't talking about the American people, they were talking about the politicians...can't remember which side it was, and who cares.  What an attitude.  What's in it for one specific political party?  Really?  Good Lord.  They aren't even pretending to care about the average person anymore are they.

Perhaps instead of finger pointing, both parties ought to start taking some accountability, no?

Absolutely.

So true, we are letting them pay their games and we are as insane as they are as cheering spectators. .

Absolutely......times 2.

Mind boggling...they are arguing over who is coming out of this looking the best?  Something is seriously wrong here.  Perhaps instead of finger pointing, both parties ought to start taking some accountability, no?

Absolutely and well said Adgal.
It seems to be about how well they appear to their own parties and constituents. I see no truth coming from anyone in Washington...it is like watching a bad reality show,

Desrt you couldn't have come up with a better quote:
"“The people get the government they deserve”.
Joseph de Maistre

I met a fairy who said she would grant me one wish.
Immediately I said, "I want to live forever."
"Sorry," said the fairy, "I'm not allowed to grant eternal life."
"OK," I said, "Then, I want to die after Congress gets its head out of its a**!"
"You crafty bas***d," said the fairy.
@ Gene-HILARIOUS, guy! Thank you for that.
@ OH-Excellence my friend..thank you!!!

Absolutely fantastic points!

gene53. LOL That was cute! Thanks for the laugh!

Altho one thing I did learn today is that for the last two years, they have had to scramble for funds to cover social security? So. why is that? They failed to say why. But could it be cause they have robbed the coffers?

Wow, everyone is pointing fingers except for where they belong.

Who are the politicians working for ? Is it the public or is it for the corporate interests that put them in office ?

Has anyone heard any talk about reducing subsidies to oil companies?
No, but we hear about cutting social security.

Do we hear about cutting back on buying more weapons to fight wars that only help the weapon manufacturers ? No. ( Remember, the US has not won a war in over 60 years)
Both sides are to blame because they are no longer working for the American public but for their corporate backers.

Our system is very broken and corrupted.

I saw this on CNN last night.  And know what was really disgusting? (at least disgusting to me) is that the political commentators from both sides were debating which political party actually benefited the most from this happening.  I couldn't believe it!  What about the fact that those who are already struggling are going to have a tax hike they cannot afford.  Mind boggling...they are arguing over who is coming out of this looking the best?  Something is seriously wrong here.  Perhaps instead of finger pointing, both parties ought to start taking some accountability, no?

Well, of course you can't see it.
You're a republican and you guys haven't seen anything clearly since the start of the election process or more accurately since the start of Obama's first term. .

Wow.  Don't hold back now.

Hey, that's your opinion, you're entitled to it...as wrong as it may be.  I'm not naive enough to think I'm not biased, but I'm not close minded and have NO problem critisizing the repubs, or the pub leaders.

I would agree with you that I see it that way because of my party affiliation IF I was blaming Dems more.  I'm not.  They both get equal the blame.

YOUR guy got the ball rolling with that preposterous proposal, and things have just continued to go down hill from there.  Just like predicted...no compromise....blame the republicans.

Well played.

I didn't say that *I* was in the middle... I said that I think THE MIDDLE is where the politicians in DC need to be.

As for me, personally, I truly AM taking up a more Centrist position.

I really DO see the good points to the Left's plan. In the same sentence, I really DO see the good points to the Right's plan. In the same sentence, I really DO see the asinine points in BOTH plans.

All of that equals = MIDDLE of the road position. It's what I've been saying all along. Compromise. But since the politicians (and some of you here on the board) don't seem to know the definition of the word "compromise", I'm calling for an entirely NEW approach.

A person, or party (not the Right and not the Left) needs to come forward with a plan that incorporates BOTH sides agenda's, and present it as their own.

Just listen to yourself... you're pointing a finger at the Republicans, and you won't bend on that. "It's THEIR fault". Nothing will get accomplished that way, don't/can't you see that?

Teko... come one. The Republicans actually DO have good points in their plan, as do the Democrats. Neither side is willing to concede, as they will "lose". The solution... a more CENTRIST plan. One that incorporates items from both agenda's.

You can "LOL" me all you want... laugh away.
